Dutch public transport (NS trains, buses, trams) accepts direct contactless Visa/Mastercard tap-in and tap-out nationwide, so foreign visitors generally do not need a separate OV-chipkaart. Alkmaar station sits on the main NS line from Amsterdam (about 35-40 minutes), and the start/finish near Kerkplein is an easy 10-minute walk from there.
