About 2 miles in, runners climb onto the Ambassador Bridge, where they are told not to take photos or selfies. The instruction comes from the Detroit Free Press Marathon FAQ. At the far end of the bridge is Windsor, Canada. "Border marathon" sounds romantic. Draw a border across the course, though, and the runner's checklist changes. Some races require a passport. At others, the start line and the finish sit in different countries, so the return bus has to be booked along with the entry. One race passes through three countries without a single stop; another climbs onto a border bridge and turns around just short of the immigration booths. In all six races collected here, the course actually crosses a border. None made the list just because the word appears in its name. The only test is what that line asks of the runner.

The number printed as time limit and the time course actually closes are not the same value. At seven races with tight cutoffs, it is the second one that stops runners.

The Rotterdam Marathon's finish time limit is 5 hours 30 minutes. With a 10 a.m. start, reaching Coolsingel by 3:30 p.m. counts as a finish. But the cut-off point sheet lists another time: the Erasmus Bridge closes at 2:15 p.m., 75 minutes before finish. Time limit is the time measured by a runner's chip; cut-off point is the time measured by the city. When the two clocks diverge, the city clock always stops the runner. The roads have to be returned to traffic at the promised time. The seven races below split into those that publish that time and those that provide only a single number.

Eight races, four continents, and not one of them decided at the start line. The Boston window opens on 14 September and shuts on the 18th.

The 2027 Boston Marathon is run on 19 April. Registration for it closes on 18 September 2026 — seven months before anyone stands in Hopkinton. That is the part the search results bury: for the races people actually want, the decision point is not race day but a window of a few days, announced quietly, often a year out. Some of those windows are random draws. One of them emptied in twelve hours. Here is where the doors stand.

The race-day times and logistics below use the published 2026 schedule as a planning example. They are not a confirmed timetable for the race on 19 April 2027.

Start with the published 2026 timetable as a worked example. It set the finish-line close on Boylston Street at 5:30 p.m. That is a time of day. Its six waves were scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 11:21 a.m., leaving different intervals from the scheduled wave start to the close: 7 hours 30 minutes for wave start 1, and 6 hours 9 minutes for wave start 6. Same course, same closing minute, 81 minutes of difference. Those are 2026 schedule calculations, not confirmed 2027 allowances; crossing the start line after the wave start gun also leaves less time. For anyone weighing this as a first marathon, that gap is the whole question, and it is not the question the race is usually sold on. Boston has been run since 1897 and the early miles fall net downhill. Both true. Neither decides whether you are still moving at half past five.

Grant Park out, Grant Park back, 29 neighbourhoods in between and an aid station every mile or two the whole way. Seven world records have been run on this road. The thing that undoes debuts here is not on the elevation profile at all.

Columbus Drive, a little after half past seven on a Sunday in October, and the wind off the lake crosses Grant Park before the first wave start has moved a step. Three waves leave this park, and 26.2 miles later every one of them comes back to it, having passed through 29 neighbourhoods on the way. That loop is most of the argument for spending a first marathon here. You finish where you started. The ground never rises enough to argue with you. There is water and Gatorade every mile or two for the entire distance, and medical cover at 22 separate points along the route. Seven world records have been set on these streets, which is the kind of sentence that sells a race and hides one. Because what a flat course does is remove every variable except effort, and the variable Chicago cannot remove is the month it is run in.

Half marathons get a fraction of the advice written about the full, and the checklist genuinely changes. Eight races, read here by start time, cutoff, entry route and price.

Almost every word written about choosing a race is written about 42.195 km. The wall, the taper, the six-hour gun-to-mat limit. Nobody rewrites the checklist for 21.0975 km, and the checklist genuinely changes. Over the half the time limit almost never decides the day, so the numbers that do decide it move somewhere else: to the hour the gun goes off, to the week the entry window opens, to the gap between what the half costs and what the full standing beside it costs, and to whether the trains are running at the hour you need them. Eight races follow. Those four numbers say more about the morning than the postcard does.

The five biggest marathons in the USA split cleanly once you stop reading prestige and start reading rules. Entry, cutoff, and the road itself — best judged one measure at a time.

Two of these five races sit at opposite ends of the same rulebook. In Honolulu there is no cutoff at all: no lottery, no qualifying standard, and nobody taken off the road at an hour fixed in advance. In Boston, from the 2027 registration onwards, a time you have already run can be marked down before it is even read — a qualifier from a course dropping 1,500 to 2,999 feet costs five minutes, 3,000 to 5,999 feet costs ten, and a drop of 6,000 feet or more is not accepted at all. Between those two poles sit Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. The separation below follows the only thing that decides whether you run: what each one asks before the start, and what it does to the clock once you are moving.

Boston, Chicago and New York get the attention. Here are ten more across three countries: a lakeshore highway in Minnesota, a net-downhill road into Sacramento, the Art Museum steps in Philadelphia, a cliff road on Highway 1, two Canadian cities and a finish in the Zocalo.

At 7:45 on a Saturday morning in June, Grandma's Marathon leaves Scenic Highway 61 near Two Harbors and follows the shore of Lake Superior for 26.2 miles into Canal Park in Duluth. In 2026 the full marathon sold out in twelve hours. That is the part of North American running the big three leave out: races with their own geography, their own clocks, and entry doors that open and shut on dates few people outside the region track. The ten marathons here run from a Marine Corps course past the National Mall to a pre-dawn start on Avenida de los Insurgentes in Mexico City. Three of them sit across a border. Three are already sold out for their next edition, Grandma's opens on October 1, and Montreal and Austin are still taking entries.

What separates a 50K bolted onto a road marathon from 100 miles in the Rockies is not the distance. It is the cutoff structure, the spacing of aid, and who is still out there after dark.

Run Rabbit Run sells two entries to the same 100 miles at the same price. Hares pay $595 plus $42.17 in processing and get 30 hours to finish. Tortoises pay $595 plus the same $42.17 and get 36. Enter as a Tortoise at 60 and over for men, 50 and over for women, and an early start stretches that to 38. The course does not change — the same 21,000 feet of climbing above Steamboat Springs either way. What changes is the clock you agreed to at checkout. Ultra marathons get sorted by distance on every race calendar, and distance is the least useful number on the page.

Ten well-known races that hand out places by stopwatch, by qualifying certificate, or by fundraising pledge. One of them still draws names — and even there, three side doors stay open.

At 09:00 on 24 August 2026, a Swedish entry page came back online with 4,000 places left on it. No draw, no waiting list, no result email in September. Whoever filled the form first had a bib for 29 May 2027. That is the whole mechanism, and it is far more common than the six-star lottery calendar suggests. Marathon registration is not one system. It is at least three, and knowing which one a race uses is worth more than any training block in December.
