Ung ChamroeunRan in 2024 · Finish time 02:21:00
“I ran the first 21km in the 29th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon 2024 in two hours and 21 minutes.”

The runner completed their first half marathon in 2 hours 21 minutes at the 2024 Angkor Wat International half marathon Marathon. They started running in 2017 and made 2024 their year of consistent running, working up from 3 km of walking and running to 5 km and 10 km before taking on their first 21 km.

JoeRan in 2017
“We stopped more than we could count because of all of the incredible temple views.”

Joe took part in the 22nd race in 2017. While traveling by tuk-tuk before dawn, Joe was delayed by vehicles carrying people sightseeing at sunrise and walked part of the way to the start. The start was also delayed by about 30 minutes. Considering the heat, Joe adjusted the pace and stopped several times to look at the temple scenery. After the midpoint of the race, vehicle and tuk-tuk exhaust fumes were uncomfortable, but Joe wrote that the unique temple course was worth recommending.

phoenixtrailsRan in 2016
“The idea of running through the ruins of Angkor Wat was irresistible.”

In 2016, a half marathon participant was able to focus less on the pressure of finishing and more on the experience of running among the ruins, thanks to the flat course. Even at 5:30 am, tuk-tuks heading to the start were caught in traffic, and the early section of the course followed the moat before passing Ta Prohm, the Victory Gate, and Bayon Temple. The participant felt the heat after sunrise and said that the final 1km was difficult.

Jaymie PizarroRan in 2012 · Finish time 02:28:00
“No regrets! I’ve got tons of pictures and a fantastic experience that’s worth more than a personal record!”

The runner completed the 2012 Angkor Wat International half marathon Marathon in 2 hours 28 minutes. They ran it at a sightseeing pace, taking photographs in the temple section. They enjoyed the flat, shaded first part and the support from local children, but noted that the final 1km was crowded because of tourists and vehicles.

Dermot SullivanFinish time 1:40:27
“All in all, it was the most memorable race I’ve ever ran.”

Dermot Sullivan ran the course through the Angkor ruins in hot, humid conditions, suffered leg cramps late in the race, and limped through finish.

We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

More details

Getting to the start

In front of Angkor Wat Temple, inside the Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia — nearest reference point is the Angkor Ticket Office at Street 60/Apsara Road, ~6km from central Siem Reap

The 31st edition starts and finishes directly in front of Angkor Wat Temple. Two main access roads from town: Charles de Gaulle Boulevard and Sivutha Boulevard/Apsara Road; travel time from central Siem Reap ~15min by taxi/bus or ~20min by tuk-tuk.

No public transit exists — participant reports advise arranging a private tuk-tuk/taxi the day before and departing hotel ~2 hours before the early-morning start (past editions started ~6:00am) due to heavy pre-dawn congestion.

Start shuttle

access is exclusively by pre-arranged tuk-tuk, taxi, or hotel transport. Access details sourced from participant race reports and general Angkor-park access guides rather than the organizer directly (contact: +855 12 775 022 / info@cambodia-events.org for official confirmation).

Transit card

Siem Reap has no city bus network, transit card, or fare gates of any kind. Runners typically get around by tuk-tuk, moto-taxi, bicycle, or on foot.

Grab and PassApp allow in-app cashless payment, but most drivers still deal in cash (USD or Cambodian riel) negotiated directly.

READY TO RUN

From race morning to after the finish.

Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.

There's no public transport to the race venue, so you'll need to arrange a tuk-tuk, taxi or hotel car in advance.

The venue is about 15 minutes by taxi or bus and about 20 minutes by tuk-tuk from central Siem Reap.

Runners recommend booking transport the day before and leaving your hotel two hours before the start to allow for early-morning traffic.

There's no separate transport back either, so most people book a round trip with the same driver.

Bib will be distributed on Thursday, December 3 and Friday, December 4 from 09:00 to 18:00, and Saturday,

December 5 from 09:00 to 20:00, at the conference hall of Courtyard by Marriott Siem Reap Resort in Siem Reap (venue to be confirmed).

At pickup you'll also get a free Angkor archaeological park entry ID pass, which you can use to preview the course from December 3 to 5.

Entry fee starts at USD 45.

Times are local to Siem Reap. Check the latest official information before the race.
