“By then, my legs were definitely feeling it.”

The runner ran the Antelope Canyon 50 Mile in Page. The deep sand and ladder and rock sections took a lot out of the runner, who was especially impressed by the canyon scenery and the food at the aid stations.

Sarah ScozzaroRan in 2016 · Finish time 10:27
“It was truly a magical place to be. You could feel the history around you almost come to life.”

Deep sand, cliffs and ladders tested the runner at Antelope Canyon Ultras 50 miles. They enjoyed the canyon’s tranquillity and scenery, finishing in 10 hours 27 minutes.

Antelope Canyon Ultras is a trail race linking the desert and narrow slot canyons around Page, Arizona.

A single course takes in mesas topped with red rock, sandy washes and passages between sandstone walls.

Your field of view shifts as you cross wide-open desert and then enter canyons where the rock walls close in around you.

The longer course mixes sandy jeep roads with exposed slickrock.

It includes steep climbs, ladders and short scrambles where you'll use your hands.

The 50-mile course also has a fixed-cable descent and a via ferrata section, so not only the footing but the way you move changes.

The terrain itself, alternating between soft sand and hard rock slopes, defines the race.

The scenery centers on sweeping views of Horseshoe Bend, Marble Canyon and Lake Powell.

The 50-mile course takes in these views and finishes on the Page Rim Trail.

Inside the canyons the sandstone is right beside you;

outside, the land around the river and lake stretches into the distance.

The 55km course also passes through Owl Canyon, Antelope Canyon,

Deer Canyon and Rigay Siani before returning across open desert and jeep roads on Antelope Ridge.

The desert backdrop is the same, but the order of the canyons and the final-section scenery depend on the event you choose.
