Blankenese Heldenlauf runner reviews and race reports

Stories from those who ran it first.

From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.

Race reports: 1
Bastian ScheefeRan in 2010
“The route along the Elbe was asphalt throughout and very enjoyable to run.”

The runner ran the Blankenese Half Marathon with a fellow runner at a sustainable pace. The stairs and repeated hills were tough in the second half, but the runner enjoyed the varied surfaces and good course markings, and crossed the finish line smiling, ahead of the target.

The Blankeneser Heldenlauf takes place in Blankenese, a neighbourhood on Hamburg's Elbe waterfront,

and lets you choose one of five course with different distances and levels of difficulty.

All course start at the corner of Strandweg and Mühlenberg, and the finish is at the Blankenese weekly market square.

Most of the course are on park paths rather than roads.

There are two half marathon.

The Sutsche follows the Elbe, briefly covering about 1 km through the Treppenviertel, known for its stairway lanes,

then runs along the Elbe beach for 5 km past the Falkenstein and Rissen waterfronts and the Rissen lighthouse.

It turns around at the Schleswig-Holstein state border and returns via the Wittenbergen heath.

The Derbe follows a similar route as far as Hirschpark,

after which it includes slopes such as the climb up Polterberg, then loops around Tafelberg and passes Falkenstein.

The toughest route is the Bergziege.

After climbing the stairs to Baur's Park, it passes through the Treppenviertel,

Bismarckstein and the Süllberg water tower, before finishing with the Waseberg, which has a maximum gradient of 15%.

The 2026 event was the 22nd edition.

Typical race-season temperature: around 18°C (64°F)

Stations & transport near the venue

Use the official hvv App to buy digital tickets with your foreign credit/debit card or Apple/Google Pay — it's the easiest option for a short visit. If you prefer a physical option, ticket machines at U-Bahn/S-Bahn stations and on buses accept contactless bank cards to purchase a ticket (this pays for the ticket, not a tap-to-ride fare).

Getting to the start

S-Bahnhof Blankenese (S1 line), about 5 minutes' walk to the event grounds

Official site states the start point is at Strandweg/Ecke Mühlenberg,

roughly 15 minutes' walk from the event venue area, with S-Bahnhof Blankenese (S1) about 5 minutes from the venue grounds.

Official site strongly urges arriving by public transport due to very limited parking in Blankenese,

and notes S-Bahn/buses run only every 20 minutes on Sundays, so extra travel time should be planned.

Getting to the finish

S-Bahnhof Blankenese (S1 line), same ~5 min walk

Official site: finish is at the Blankeneser Wochenmarkt (weekly market square).

Not accepted at the gates — get the local card above

Alternative: Hamburg CARD from €12.90 (1-day single) — Worth it if you're sightseeing for multiple days, since it bundles unlimited hvv travel (zone AB, incl.

airport) with up to 50% off 150+ attractions.

More details

Hamburg's transit system is proof-of-payment (no gates), so contactless bank cards work at ticket machines to purchase a ticket,

but there is no confirmed direct tap-in/tap-out open-loop fare system yet.

Some buses have stopped accepting cash entirely, making a card, app, or the hvv Prepaid Card the practical choice.

Stations & transport near the venue

Hamburg's transit is run by the HVV, covering S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses, and ferries;

single tickets and day passes are available from HVV vending machines at stations or the HVV app.

The nationwide Deutschlandticket (about 58 EUR/month) also covers all HVV services, convenient if traveling to multiple German cities.

Blankenese, where the race is held, is reachable via S-Bahn line S1 or S11 to Blankenese station.

READY TO RUN

From race morning to after the finish.

Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.

The 2027 event takes place on Sunday, 29 August.

At the 2026 event, bib was distributed from 12:30–18:00 on the previous day at Neues Markthaus (Blankeneser Bahnhofstraße 31a),

and until 10:00 am on race day at the Blankenese parish hall (Gemeindehaus, Mühlenberger Weg 64a).

You had to show your confirmation and an identity card or passport.

Parking is limited, so it is best to travel to the event venue from Blankenese Station on the S1, which is about a 5-minute walk away.

The start is about a 15-minute walk from the venue, so allow plenty of time.

Baggage check is available at the venue from 8:00 am on race day, and changing rooms are open from 8:00–14:00 at Gymnasium Blankenese.

The arrows for bib and course are colour-coded by event.

The Sutsche is orange, the Derbe is blue, the 11 km route is green and the Bergziege is red, so follow only the arrows in your colour.

There are four aid station, where ESN sports drink is provided, and bananas are also available at the two later half marathon.

Only open-ear headphones are permitted;

other headphones are grounds for disqualification.

Times are local to Hamburg. Check the latest official information before the race.
