The Durango Marathon is the first race held at this location in the Colorado mountains, at an elevation of about 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).

Course is made up of paved roads passing near the narrow-gauge railway station in downtown Durango and around Santa Rita Park along the Animas River,

with a 5km event also held alongside the marathon and half marathon.
