Newport News One City Marathon is a road race that crosses the city of Newport News, Virginia, from end to end.
The point-to-point full marathon starts in one location and finishes in another, following the length of Newport News.
Unlike a race that repeatedly circles the same area, the city’s districts and scenery change one after another as you run,
giving concrete meaning to the “One City” in the event’s name.
Course passes through parks, waterfront areas and historic residential neighbourhoods on the Virginia Peninsula before heading downtown.
The route moves through green spaces and residential areas towards the city’s industrial district.
The finish is in the city centre, home to Newport News Shipbuilding, where US aircraft carriers are built.
With the route moving from parks into the city centre and the shipbuilding landscape added to the course,
this is not an event defined solely by coastal scenery.
Full marathon is a USATF-certified course, and you can submit a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon.
Although the race attracts participants aiming for a fast time,
the overall weekend also includes half marathon, shorter-distance events and the children’s Nautical Mile.
A challenge combining the weekend’s short and long events is also offered.
After finishing, you can head to the One City Celebration in the Yard District with your companions.
The route through the city and the gathering in the downtown area form one continuous race-weekend experience.
