Know the course and time limit, and race day comes into focus.
Course is made by combining color-coded loops.
5 miles is the yellow loop, and half marathon is the pink loop.
30km adds a yellow loop to the pink loop, and full marathon goes around the pink loop twice.
50 km is composed of full marathon plus 5 miles.
The cumulative elevation gain varies from sport to sport.
5 miles is 480 feet, half marathon 1,530 feet, 30km is 2,010 feet, full marathon is 3,070 feet, and 50km is 3,550 feet.
A large portion of the road surface is dirt.
Full marathon is 39% singletrack, 59% dirt road, and 2% asphalt.
The 50km consists of 36 percent singletrack, 62 percent dirt, and 2 percent asphalt.
The markings are ribbons spaced approximately 200 yards apart.
Two or more polka dot signs are hung on the same side in front of the turning point to indicate turning at a fork in the road.
After completing the turn, a yellow or pink ribbon follows, and the blue ribbon points in the wrong direction.
The distance is measured using a roller tape measuring wheel.
The course record is full marathon for men, 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 17 seconds (Aaron Mora, 2019),
and for women, 4 hours, 23 minutes, 54 seconds (Natalie Chun, 2024).
50 km is 4 hours, 15 minutes and 55 seconds for men (Jeff Moss, 2025) and 4 hours, 39 minutes and 23 seconds for women (Beverly Anderson-Abbs, 2022).

So on race morning, you can just run.
No BART/train station at venue; nearest connection is Fruitvale BART, then AC Transit bus into Redwood Regional Park
AC Transit route #339 (weekdays) runs from Fruitvale BART to Chabot Space & Science Center on Skyline Blvd, and route #54 (weekdays/weekends) runs from Fruitvale BART to the corner of Redwood Road and Campus Drive — both near the park but require a walk to the actual trailhead. Driving directions: exit 2 off CA-13, follow Joaquin Miller Rd, turn left onto Skyline Blvd.
Remote East Bay hills park venue — public transit (AC Transit bus) reaches the general area but not the start line itself; most participants drive.
Same as start — race starts/finishes within Redwood Regional Park (Oakland hills)
Park entrance parking is $5/vehicle at main entrances during operating hours.
Oakland is served by the SF Bay Area's Clipper card (physical or mobile wallet), usable across AC Transit buses, BART, and other regional operators. Contactless bank cards now also tap directly at fare gates on most agencies (since December 2025).
The Redwood Regional Park trailhead itself is not transit-accessible, so plan to drive or rideshare for the final stretch.
