The Tallahassee Marathon and half marathon is organized by Gulf Winds Track Club, a local nonprofit running club,
and is a long-established race that has continued since the marathon was first held in 1975 with just two participants.
The half marathon event was added later, in the mid-1980s, and the 2024 race marked its 50th anniversary.
Half marathon course starts on Monroe Street in downtown Tallahassee, heads north,
then turns east along Glenview Drive through the Midtown and Old Town districts.
The first half features gentle climbs, including the Lafayette Street hill.
In the second half, the gradient eases somewhat as the route crosses FAMU Way and passes through Florida A&M University,
then goes through the pedestrian tunnel on Stadium Drive and past Florida State University's (FSU) Doak Campbell Stadium and Dick Howser Stadium.
After leaving the university area,
the course returns through downtown and continues to finish near the Florida Supreme Court building, the State Capitol, and City Hall.
The entire course is on paved roads, with gentle elevation changes from about 15 meters to roughly 60 meters above sea level.
It is described as a course that is well suited to enjoying the city scenery and finishing without major climbs or descents.
In addition to the marathon and half marathon, a marathon relay is also held.
