The Teardevil 30-Mile Bushwhack is an informal annual “Fun Run” that has taken place since 2018.

It is a point-to-point course running from the Old Well on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus to Duke Chapel at Duke University in Durham.

It is a self-organized gathering unaffiliated with any organization, and approximately 90% of the route consists of trails or unpaved sections.

Each year, organizers create a new 30-mile route by linking trails, forest roads, woods, deer paths, creek crossings,

drainage channels, and other sections under temporary permission from public-land agencies and several private landowners.

The direction alternates each year.

Participants run together as a group without rankings or official times,

and there are reportedly no prizes, timing, bib, finisher finisher medal, or marked course.

The event’s underlying goal is reportedly to one day create a permanent walking route connecting UNC and Duke.

Typical race-season temperature: around 10°C (49°F)
Short sleeves or light long sleeves + arm warmers
Terrain
Approximately 90% trail/off-road.

More details

Getting to the start

Duke Chapel, Duke University, Durham, NC

Stated plainly on official race site (tardevil.org): meet at Duke Chapel at 7:00am. 2027 is an odd year, so direction runs Duke→UNC (alternates by year).

No official transit station — campus landmark. This is an unofficial/informal 'fun run' using public trails and roads with some private landowner permissions between Duke and UNC — not a permitted road-closure event.

Getting to the finish

The Old Well, UNC-Chapel Hill campus, Chapel Hill, NC

Finish around 2:00pm.

Start shuttle

No official shuttle. Official site states plainly: 'Transportation to the start and from the finish is your responsibility,' though organizer notes informal vans may be available on request.

READY TO RUN

From race morning to after the finish.

Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.

March averages 10°C. In Chapel Hill, wind is a bigger factor than the cold.

A light windbreaker will help retain body heat, and leave a dry change of clothes in advance for after you finish.

Entry fee uses tiered pricing, ranging from $30 to $50 depending on when you register.

The payment processing fee ($3.50) is additional.

Ultras are decided by fueling and foot care, not speed.

Break in your shoes and socks thoroughly before race day, and if there are nighttime sections, bring spare batteries for your headlamp.

Times are local to Chapel Hill. Check the latest official information before the race.
