The Traverse City Trail Running Festival brings runners of many distances together in the Pere Marquette State Forest in northern Michigan.
It uses the VASA trail system, a mix of narrow singletrack and wide doubletrack you can run side by side on.
The organizers describe the surface as soft and smooth, but the longer course also includes forest hills.
The short course is mostly flat with gentle rollers, while the long loop is designed with a steep climb in the first half.
The festival opens with shorter individual races and relays, followed the next day by longer individual races and an ultra relay.
Long-distance runners build their distance by repeating the same forest loop, meeting the terrain again each lap;
one lap through the forest is the basic unit of every event.
With short and long distances in one event, runners trying trails for the first time mix with those spending a long day in the woods.
After finishing, you can share food and drinks, relax by the campfire or play lawn games while cheering on other runners.
As the long events keep finishing, those who are done stay on site to welcome the runners behind them.
Finisher finisher medal are made of wood, a keepsake of a race in the forest.
Course that change in width and elevation, loops for each distance and time spent together after the run define the festival's character.
Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.

Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
Packet Pickup takes place at Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort on the day before and the day of the race.
Mail delivery is also available, so check your registration details in advance to confirm whether you are collecting your race materials on site.
Event parking is first come, first served.
When the lot is full, you can park in the northern lot at Grand Traverse Academy and use the shuttle.
Parking is prohibited on Hammond Road and Six Mile Road, so do not leave your car in an open roadside space.
Drop bags and support from companions in the ultra events are permitted only in the designated area at the Timber Ridge aid station.
You may leave a bag or small cooler there, but you must collect it yourself before the race ends.
Receiving support outside the designated area may affect your official finish, and companions must wait within that area as well.
Detailed drop-bag and support procedures are based on the official information from the previous edition,
so compare them with the permitted areas in the new participant guide.
Other event markings may still be present at course, so follow the flag in the same colour as your bib.
Checking the direction arrows together with the GPX files for each distance will make it easier to distinguish the correct direction at junctions.
Times are local to Traverse City. Check the latest official information before the race.
