Six marathons that cross a border: do you need a passport? It depends on the race

At 7am on Sunday, October 18, 2026, waves leave Fort Street in downtown Detroit at 3-minute intervals. About 2 miles later comes the entrance to the Ambassador Bridge. On race day, vehicles use one side of the bridge and runners the other.

Across the river is Windsor. The way back runs under the river through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which is closed to traffic from 6:15am to 10:15am. Three events are listed as crossing the border: the marathon, the International half marathon and the first leg of the marathon relay.

Runners in all three must carry documents valid for the crossing: a passport, or an enhanced driver's license issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont or Washington. Organizers note separately that a conviction such as drunk driving can make a runner inadmissible to Canada, and they state plainly that crossing a border illegally is a federal offense. Liquids are no longer restricted, but border officers may stop or confiscate a large hydration pack that looks like a backpack.

Time limit: 6 hours 30 minutes, counted from when the last pacer crosses the start line. The finish closes at 2pm, at Woodward Avenue and Congress Street, just south of Campus Martius. Registration for 2026 closed on September 8 and shows sold out.

The next edition opens on January 1, 2027, first come, first served; opening-week pricing was $120, rising to $170 by the deadline. At this race, the passport is not one more line on the packing list. It ranks with the bib.

Forget the bib and the race never starts. Forget the passport and it ends at mile 2.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

2Victoria Falls Marathon, With a Turnaround on the Border Bridge

It may be called a border marathon, but Victoria Falls Marathon runners never enter Zambia. The race starts at Baobab Primary School in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, climbs onto the Victoria Falls Bridge and turns around just short of the Zambian immigration post. It is a course that faces the neighboring country from the bridge, then turns its back.

The bridge is closed for runners from 6am to 8:30am on race day. So there is no reason to pull out a passport on the course. The paperwork happens elsewhere.

Organizers ask runners to bring a passport (an ID card for Zimbabwe residents) along with proof of payment. Entry fee receipt in hand, runners also complete Zimbabwe's online arrival form in advance, and that form decides whether a visa fee applies. Off the bridge, Zambezi Drive runs along the river, with turnaround point s at the national park gate, on the safari lodge grounds and on the Kazungula road.

The full marathon runs this loop twice. Start times: marathon 6:15am, half marathon 7:15am, relay 6:45am. Water comes roughly every 4–5km.

Earphones are banned; in the organizers' words, runners are entering the animals' own habitat. The 2027 race is on Sunday, July 4, the 19th edition. About 5,000 runners take part, and it is an official Comrades Marathon qualifier.

General entries are due to open in March 2027, and the previous edition filled early. The surest way to lock in a place sooner is an official travel-partner package. The number to memorize here is 6 hours: the full marathon time limit.

Anyone likely to be checking a watch in the national-park stretch of the second lap should build training backward from it.

Lindau, Germany

33-Country Marathon — A Lakeside Course Through Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet at the eastern end of Lake Constance, and the 3-Country Marathon touches all three. At 9:45am on October 11, 2026, it starts from the harbor on Lindau Island in Germany, follows the shore into Bregenz, Austria, and passes the Seebühne floating stage. Through Hard, Fußach and Höchst it crosses into St Margrethen, Switzerland, then returns to Austria to finish at Bregenz Stadium.

Three border crossings, not one stop: all three countries are in the Schengen Area. The elevation difference over 42.195km is 17m, and more than half the route is paved lakeside path. If one course among the six is to be picked with a fast time in mind, it is this one.

Online entry is open until midnight on October 10; after that, only on-site entry remains. The full marathon costs €105 through September 25 and €110 after. The half marathon is already full.

The hard part is logistics. The start is in Germany, the finish in Austria. Packet Pickup is in Austria too, at the Bregenz Festival Hall, in person only: Friday, October 9, 13:00–18:00; Saturday, October 10, 9:00–18:00; race morning 6:30–9:00.

On race morning, special trains run between Bregenz station and Lindau-Reutin, and the bib doubles as a free return ticket. From Reutin it is a 10–15 minute walk to the start. Lindau Island is closed to cars that day.

So stay in Bregenz, where the race ends. Take the morning train across the border to the start line, then run that rail line in reverse, back to the hotel door.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France

4Donibane Hondarribia Half Marathon, With a Finish in Spain and Reserved Return Buses

The Donibane Hondarribia Basque Country half marathon is named for its two ends. Donibane is the Basque name for Saint-Jean-de-Luz in France; Hondarribia is the Spanish town across the river. The race starts at 10am on October 25, 2026, from Place Ferdinand Foch, next to the harbor and town hall in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

In Hendaye it follows the beach promenade all the way to the mouth of the Bidasoa, runs along the marina, then crosses the river into Hondarribia. The finish is at the top of Calle Mayor, beside the Parador. The start is about 1km from Saint-Jean-de-Luz–Ciboure station.

The distance is 21.1km with 225m of climbing. A coastal course sounds flat; the numbers say otherwise. Time limit: 2 hours 45 minutes, with the finish closing at 12:45pm.

Runners must be 18 or older. Getting back is this race's second course. No railway reaches Hondarribia.

Organizers run a return bus between the finish and Saint-Jean-de-Luz for about €5, but it is not walk-up: it has to be booked with the entry. Leave that box empty, and getting from the Spanish finish back to France is a problem to solve alone.

Wolgast, Germany

5Usedom — Starting in Poland, With a 2-Hour-30-Minute Cut-Off at 21.8km

Usedom is Germany's second-largest island, and its eastern tip is Polish. The Usedom Marathon starts at 9am from the Flota stadium in Świnoujście, on the Polish side. Soon after, the course passes the border crossing into Ahlbeck, Germany, then runs on through Heringsdorf and Bansin; with Ahlbeck, these are the island's three main resorts.

It follows the beach promenade before turning onto forest roads, finishing in Wolgast at the island's western end. The surface mixes paving stones, asphalt and forest track. The start is a long way from the finish.

In 2026, organizer buses left from near the Wolgast registration office at 7:15am, and bags were carried separately to the finish stadium. The half marathon starts in Wolgast, so the border crossing belongs to the full marathon and the relay. The 2026 race, on September 5, was the 46th edition.

The 2027 date has not been announced; early September is expected. Entry fee for the full marathon ranged from €30 to €45 in 2026. The real border in this race is on the clock.

Kölpinsee at 21.8km must be reached within 2 hours 30 minutes, Zinnowitz at 30km within 3 hours 30 minutes, and the overall limit is 5 hours 20 minutes. On the overall limit alone, 7:35 per kilometer looks generous. The first cut-off point demands 6:53.

A runner pacing an even 5-hour full marathon reaches Kölpinsee at about 2 hours 35 minutes: five minutes too late. If the plan involves walking in the second half, first make sure the opening 21.8km holds up.

Chester, United Kingdom

6Chester Marathon, Crossing Between England and Wales

Not every border comes with a checkpoint. The Chester Marathon runs 19 miles of its course in England and 7 in Wales. The line lies inside the United Kingdom, so no documents are needed.

It makes this list because the course genuinely crosses it. The 16th edition starts at 9am on October 11, 2026, inside Chester Racecourse. It passes Chester Cathedral, the medieval Rows, Roman remains and the Eastgate Clock, then heads out into the Cheshire and North Wales countryside.

The return follows the River Dee to a finish on Castle Drive in the city center. The route is mostly flat, with a gentle climb late on. It has been named the UK's marathon of the year three times.

Entries for 2026 are closed. Runners who entered after September 26, or with an address outside the UK, collect their bib from the help desk in the event village at the Little Roodee car park. Collecting on October 10, the day before, between 14:00 and 17:00, avoids the morning crush.

Chester station is about a 20-minute walk from the start. For a first border marathon, start here. No passport, no return bus: just the feeling of crossing a line twice.
