Is a 5:30 marathon cutoff really five and a half hours? Seven races, seven answers

The number printed as time limit and the time course actually closes are not the same value. At seven races with tight cutoffs, it is the second one that stops runners.

The Rotterdam Marathon's finish time limit is 5 hours 30 minutes. With a 10 a.

m. start, reaching Coolsingel by 3:30 p.

m. counts as a finish.

But the cut-off point sheet lists another time: the Erasmus Bridge closes at 2:15 p.m.

, 75 minutes before finish. Time limit is the time measured by a runner's chip; cut-off point is the time measured by the city.

When the two clocks diverge, the city clock always stops the runner. The roads have to be returned to traffic at the promised time.

The seven races below split into those that publish that time and those that provide only a single number.

Rotterdam, Netherlands

1NN Marathon Rotterdam โ€” 2:45 cut-off at halfway

NN Rotterdam Marathon

There are three of cut-off point. 21.1km in under 2 hours 45 minutes, 28km in under 3 hours 40 minutes, and the Erasmus Bridge by 2:15 PM. The first number explains the entire nature of this race.

2 hours 45 minutes is exactly half of 5 hours 30 minutes. A typical race for a runner who finishes in the 5 hour 30 minute range is 2 hours 30 minutes in the first half and 3 hours in the second half. In Rotterdam, that split does not work.

The moment you try to take the first half too comfortably, you get caught at the half marathon point. Course starts from Schiedamsedijk, crosses the Erasmus Bridge, goes around the southern Feyenoord stadium and Ahoy area, crosses the bridge once more, and returns to the city center. The final part is a loop around Kralingse Plas, and finish is Coolsingel.

With almost no elevation change and multiple world records set there, it is course, and that is why cut-off point is even tighter. The reason you slow down on the flat course is not the terrain, but the pace judgment. To hit 3 hours 40 minutes at 28km, you have to cover the 6.9km after half marathon in 55 minutes.

All the time you saved earlier is spent here.

Auckland, New Zealand

2Auckland Half โ€” 9:40 cut-off before the Harbour Bridge

Auckland Half Marathon

The race starts at 6:50 a.m. on King Edward Parade in Devonport.

Time limit is 4 hours. Cut-off point is posted on wall clocks at three points: Smales Farm at 10km, 8:55 a.m.

; the Onewa Road on-ramp at 14km, 9:40 a.m.; and Point Erin aid station at 17km, 10:15 a.

m. The middle number is the gate. Auckland Harbour Bridge, the defining section of course, sits behind that cut-off point.

A runner who does not reach the on-ramp by 9:40 a.m. cannot get onto the bridge, and without the bridge there is no route through Westhaven Marina and Wynyard Quarter to Victoria Park.

That leaves 2 hours 50 minutes from the start to the on-ramp. Two hours 50 minutes for 14km is a walking allowance, but the opening stretch from Devonport through Takapuna runs along the water, and that is where the margin goes.

Eindhoven, Netherlands

3Eindhoven Marathon: Finish Line Closes at 3:45 p.m.

ASML Eindhoven Marathon

The finish at Vestdijk closes at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

The race starts at 10 a.m., with runners lining up from 9:30 a.

m. The official cutoff is 5 hours 30 minutes, measured from the time the final runner crosses start line. Runners in the later waves therefore have the full 5 hours 30 minutes, but the 3:45 p.

m. closing time applies to everyone. Both the start at Montgomerylaan and the finish at Vestdijk are within walking distance of Eindhoven Central Station.

No shuttle buses run. Organizers recommend NS trains and Hermes buses, but some services will not operate on race day or will run to altered timetables. Once finish closes at 3:45 p.

m. and the city-center roads begin reopening, it is safest to plan in advance for the walk back to the station after finishing.

Cardiff, United Kingdom

4Cardiff Half Marathon: Sweep Bus After 4 Hours, Then the Climb at Mile 12

Cardiff Half Marathon

Time limit 4 hours; once that time expires, Sweep Vehicle sweeps course to reopen the roads. The race starts at 10 a.m.

Wheelchair Division sets off first at 9:50 a.m., followed by the white, green and red pens at 10 a.

m. and the blue, purple and yellow pens at 10:10 a.m.

All 13.1 miles run on city streets closed to traffic. Start line lies outside Cardiff Castle, while finish is the grandstand at the Civic Centre. The course is mostly flat, with only two notable rises: the ramp into Cardiff Bay around mile 6, and the steep hill on Fairoak Road at mile 12.

The second is the problem for runners targeting roughly 4 hours. A hill rises with only 1.1 miles remaining, by which point Sweep Vehicle has closed to within a few minutes from behind. The race began with 1,500 runners in 2003; it now draws more than 27,500 entrants, and that field funnels into a single line before the final hill.

Houston, United States

5Houston Half Marathon: Mile 7.6 Course Split at 10:15 a.m.

Houston Marathon

Time limit is 4 hours. Covering 13.1 miles in 4 hours means 18 minutes 18 seconds per mileโ€”walking pace. On paper, time limit barely seems to have a cutoff.

What separates runners in practice is the split on course. Half marathon starts on the same start line as the Chevron Houston Marathon, at Congress and Fannin, and follows full marathon for 7.6 miles before splitting away. That split comes at 10:15 a.

m. The first corral starts at 6:55 a.m.

, while the remaining corral leave in waves to ease congestion. For runners assigned to the rear corral, the real margin is less than 3 hours 20 minutes. Course clocks sit every 5km, but all are set from the 6:55 a.

m. start, so the numbers seen on the course by runners in the back corral are not their own chip time.

Kaunas, Lithuania

6Kaunas: Cut-Offs by Distance, Timing Ends at 4:30 p.m.

Kaunas Marathon

Time limit lists two times. One is the cutoff for each event: 5 hours 30 minutes for the marathon, 2 hours 45 minutes for half marathon, and 1 hour 30 minutes for the 10km. The other is 4:30 p.

m., when the timing system shuts down and the roads reopen. The marathon and half marathon start together at 8:30 a.

m. Using the full 5 hours 30 minutes takes runners to 2 p.m.

, leaving 2 hours 30 minutes before timing ends. The 10km starts at 3 p.m.

, so its 1 hour 30 minute cutoff ends exactly when timing closes. The 5km starts at 2 p.m.

The later the event starts, the more closely the two clocks overlap; runners starting last have no margin left. Course starts near Kaunas Akropolis, heads toward the Old Town and returns. The marathon, half marathon and 10km are all measured under World Athletics and AIMS standards.

Vilnius, Lithuania

7Vilnius Marathon: 5-Hour 30-Minute Cut-Off, No Checkpoint Times Published

Vilnius Marathon

The cutoff is 5 hours 30 minutes. The race starts at 8:30 a.m.

, and both start line and finish are Cathedral Square in the Old Town. That is everything the organisers publish. No intermediate cut-off point times are listed.

The absence of a cut-off point table is not the absence of a cut-off point. Course follows a single loop along the Neris River through the Old Town, then heads out to the cycling and pedestrian paths of Vingis Park and the Valakampiai woods before returning. The forest and park sections are not vehicle roads, so there is less pressure to reopen them, and less reason to publish a time.

The average September temperature is 13ยฐC. For a runner planning to use the full 5 hours 30 minutes, that works in their favour. It will not prevent the familiar collapse around 30km.

Editor's pick

Judged by the clock alone, the order is clear. For a finish around 5 hours 30 minutes, Rotterdam is not the choice. The half marathon 2 hours 45 minutes cut-off point takes time away from the second half before the race even reaches it, so the same finishing time can still end in a cutoff here.

At 5 hours 30 minutes, Kaunas or Vilnius is safer. Both start at 8:30 a.m.

and end their finish cutoff at 2 p.m.; in Kaunas, timing continues for another 2 hours 30 minutes after that.

For a runner who needs 4 hours at half marathon, Houston is the better fit. The 18 minutes 18 seconds per mile is not a practical cutoff, and once the 7.6-mile checkpoint is cleared, no further time limit applies. Auckland is the opposite.

The headline number is also 4 hours, but cut-off point stands in succession at 10km, 14km and 17km; missing any one of them ends the race before the Harbour Bridge. For runners chasing a time, flat Rotterdam is the course on this list where the clock works most generously.

Two figures need checking before entering: the start time of the assigned wave and the time listed for cut-off point. Subtracting one from the other gives the time actually available, not the number printed in the regulations.

A later wave always gets less time than the stated cutoff allows.
