“I would probably not run Carlsbad again due to the course.”

JPearlAZ finished their first marathon at the 2026 Carlsbad Marathon in 4:20:33. It was a beautiful course along the coast, but the uphill sections at miles 4.8, 6.8, and 9, and around miles 18 and 20, were tough, and they slowed down later in the race because of the heat and the aid stations. The expo was small and quick to visit, but the start was crowded, and they found the finish-line festival somewhat disappointing.

“I was in pain, and was really missing my family.”

Sugar Magnolia experienced sciatic nerve and leg pain during the Carlsbad Marathon, making it hard to keep to the planned run-walk ratio. At the 24-mile mark, they were directed onto a detour course and then had to follow sidewalks and cross intersections without aid stations. They finished in 6:07, a big improvement over previous marathon times.

“The only significant hill to speak of on this course is right around mile 9.”

Dane paced the 2010 Carlsbad Marathon at a 3:10:00 pace. He described the early stretch along the coastline and the climb around mile 9, and noted the congestion later where half marathon and full marathon runners shared the course. He finished in 3:09:52.

The roots of the Carlsbad Marathon lie in the San Diego Marathon.

In 1978, the Heart of San Diego Marathon was established, giving San Diego two marathons,

and the two events were merged after In Motion took over their operation.

The event later moved from San Diego to Carlsbad and is known as one of the longest-running races on the West Coast.

The marathon and half marathon start at Westfield Carlsbad and return to the same location.

It is a course along Highway 101, with views of the Pacific Ocean and sections through Carlsbad Village, along the beach, and beside the lagoon.

The time limit is 6 hours for the marathon and 4 hours for the half marathon.

Full marathon finishers can add the San Diego half marathon and the America's Finest City half marathon to pursue the SoCal Triple Crown.
