“The very difficult course and headwind did us no favors.”

The runner headed toward Chania over undulating roads and long climbs. After 36 km, leg cramps forced the runner to alternate between walking and running until the finish.

“Caroline and I decided to run together, take it easy and enjoy it, and that is exactly what we did.”

A Crete Marathon participant recorded the journey to Chania and Packet Pickup, the out-and-back coastal course, and congestion caused by traffic and participants from other events in the second half.

We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

The Crete Marathon is an international road race held in Chania, Crete, Greece.

It is aimed at combining sporting events and local cultural events, and is included in the official schedule of the Greek Athletics Federation.

This competition is run with the purpose of honoring Irineos Galanakis, who carried out religious, humanitarian, and social activities.

The fact that remembering the city and local people is placed alongside long-distance running shows the nature of the competition.

The revealed full marathon starts in front of the Chania Sports Facility and passes through the market and Halidon Street before entering the old port.

After passing through Talo Square and the coastal streets, it extends west towards Maleme,

and after returning, passes Kalamaki and Agiyi Apostoli Park, north of Hrish Akti, and returns to Chania.

In course, you will see different scenery of Chania by running through the market street, the old port, and the coastal road leading out of the city.

The final is inside the Chania Stadium, so the route from the city center and the coast ends at the stadium.

In addition to full marathon, we also run short road events, and each event is given a local commemorative figure and the meaning of a popular sport.

The structure is such that long-distance participants and short-distance participants run Chania in the same event.

The current official course introduction suggests the area around the old port and beach as the main route.

Rather than a specific hill or elevation difference,

the outline of the city from the market to the port and back to the west coast becomes the basis for understanding this competition.

Stations & transport near the venue

Carry cash — Crete's KTEL intercity buses (the only public transit connecting towns/villages) are mainly a cash-on-board system, so plan to pay the driver in euros or buy at a station counter.

More details

Details are from the 2026 edition page (the 2027 page is not yet populated with race-day details);

No road-closure/traffic-control announcement found.

Official Transportation page lists only general travel discounts to reach Crete/Chania (Aegean Airlines 30% off code CRETEMAR26, ANEK Lines 50% off ferry to Souda/Chania, Chania-Rethymno bus 50% round-trip discount, free Chania city bus for runners on race day) -- not start/finish shuttle logistics.

An older 2022-edition page describes a shuttle from KTEL Chania bus station to a point-to-point course start in Kolymbari,

but the current course is a stadium loop, so that no longer applies.

More details
