Starting in Emmersdorf and passing the vineyard villages of Spitz and Dürnstein before finishing in Krems, it is a course through a World Heritage valley.
With full, half marathon, quarter, relay, and Nordic walking events, it is an autumn festival-style race attracting more than 7,000 participants.
Picture the course in advance

RACE WEEK
Know the course and time limit, and race day comes into focus.
From the 2026 editionMarathon course starts at 10 a.m. from the leisure center in Emmersdorf,
goes downstream to Weitenegg on the Danube River, makes a loop, and continues upstream to Krems.
Spitz an der Donau, near the halfway point, is also the starting point for half marathon, and departs right next to the dock facing the Danube River.
Afterwards, it passes through Achleiten and Dürnstein and passes finish at Krems.
Because the entire section is flat,
the Emmersdorf-Krems section is introduced by the competition as ‘one of the easiest and fastest sections.’ From Emmersdorf, the starting point,
you can see Melk Abbey, and the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
continues with terraced vineyards, medieval villages, wine taverns, monasteries, and castle ruins.

Wachaubahn stations: 'Emmersdorf an der Donau' (marathon), 'Spitz' (half marathon), 'Dürnstein-Loiben' (quarter marathon)
The full marathon starts in Emmersdorf, the half marathon in Spitz, and the quarter marathon in Dürnstein — all three are stops on the seasonal Wachaubahn heritage railway (NÖVOG), which runs along the Danube directly beside the race route.
Krems an der Donau (Wachaubahn / ÖBB station)
All distances finish in Krems an der Donau, which also has a regular ÖBB rail connection to Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof (about 1 hour, no transfer needed).
The Wachaubahn seasonal tourist train itself effectively functions as the shuttle, connecting all three start towns to the Krems finish along the race corridor.
Krems an der Donau in the Wachau valley is served by regional OBB trains and Postbus/VOR-network buses, with tickets bought via the OBB Scotty app, station vending machines, or on board. There is no dedicated foreign-visitor transit card here; the OBB app is the most convenient option, and many spectators drive or take the Wachau riverboat along the Danube.
