THE DREAM
The Abbott Longford Marathon is held every August in Longford town, the county town of County Longford in central Ireland.
The 2026 race will be the 26th edition and is known for its course through the three counties of Longford, Roscommon and Leitrim.
Pharmaceutical company Abbott is the title sponsor.
The programme includes a 63.4km ultramarathon, full marathon, half marathon and 5km race.
It is a full member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS),
and all race proceeds are donated to St Christopher's Services, an organisation supporting people with disabilities.
Longford town has a population of about 11,000 and sits at the junction of the N4 and N5 national roads.

Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“Nice low-key race running through farmland and small towns in north-central Ireland.”Chris Boundy completed the Longford Marathon on flat rural course in cloudy weather, recording his fourth-fastest marathon time.
We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

RACE WEEK
Know the course and time limit, and race day comes into focus.
The departure and arrival points are both on Main Street, Longford town centre,
and the competition headquarters will be located at the nearby Longford Arms Hotel.
Course begins with a 1-mile loop around the town,
then follows the N5 Strokestown Road for a few miles before turning right onto a quiet country road lined with houses and farms.
In this section, the characteristics of course, which crosses the border between Roscommon and Leitrim and connects three counties, are revealed.
Finally, it returns to Longford Town via Battery Road and passes finish.
The road surface is paved with asphalt throughout the entire section and there is almost no elevation difference,
making it the flattest and fastest course among domestic competitions in Ireland.
Most of the four events, from the 63.4km ultramarathon to the 5km, share course and the return points are divided by distance.

August is the end of summer in Ireland.
Longford has an oceanic climate, with average summer temperatures around 16°C.
Annual rainfall is fairly evenly distributed at about 845mm, so showers remain possible on race day.
Temperatures are generally low enough that heat is not a major concern.
Course follows an almost completely flat asphalt route, making it easier to hold pace.
It is known as a race popular with runners targeting personal best.
The start, finish and race headquarters at a hotel are all in or near the town centre, keeping logistics relatively simple.
Longford lies where the N4 and N5 meet, making it reasonably accessible by car from nearby cities including Dublin.
