THE DREAM
The 64th edition of the marathon around Lake Baldeney in Essen.
Alongside the marathon, the 'Westenergie Seerunde', a team relay and a mini-marathon are also held.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“The starting signal sounded at 10:00.”
For their first marathon, the runner paced themselves carefully over two flat laps of the lake course. Leg pain limited their acceleration in the second half, but with their family's encouragement, they achieved their sub-four-hour goal.

Nicole Funke followed the 4-hour pacer around Baldeneysee at the Westenergie Marathon, setting a best of 3 hours 59 minutes 12 seconds. Her thighs burned at 34km, but she left the group late and accelerated to 7th in her age group.

The Westenergie Marathon is a road race along Lake Baldeney in Essen, Germany.
It's run by volunteers from TUSEM Essen's athletics department and includes full marathon, a one-lap lake race and a team relay.
The organizers and sponsor highlight the long tradition of the lake marathon and the wide range of events families can join.
Rather than touring the city's main streets, the race keeps to the lakeshore and showcases Essen's waterfront.
Full marathon runs a short opening section and then two laps of Lake Baldeney.
Course is fully paved with asphalt, and the terrain is flat.
In the Heisingen section past the Kampmann Bridge,
runners do a short out-and-back on Wuppertaler Straße on both laps to make up the exact full marathon distance.
The route repeats laps of the lake, with the shoreline route and this out-and-back together forming course.
The route is measured to international standards and has distance markers.
The one-lap lake race starts at Seaside Beach, circles the lake once and returns.
At the end, runners loop counterclockwise around the Seaside Beach grounds to the finish by the lakeside promenade.
In the team relay, four runners split full marathon distance, with men's, women's and mixed teams.
Kids' races and a walking event are also on offer, so beyond solo long-distance runners, families and teams can experience the lake too.

Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
Essen-Hügel station (S-Bahn line S6), about 800 m from the start/finish area
Start/finish venue: Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße 209 (near the Seaside Beach) at Lake Baldeney, Essen. Race date confirmed Sunday 11.10.2026. Essen-Hügel is a regional S-Bahn stop, not the Essen Hauptbahnhof — connect via S6 from Essen Hbf.
With your participation confirmation, you can ride VRR public transit (fare zone C) in 2nd class free on race day. The venue is about 800m from Essen-Hügel station (S6).
There is free parking near the start and finish and along Lerchenstraße.
Same as start — Essen-Hügel (S6), ~800 m walk
Free parking near start/finish, but organizer recommends S-Bahn given likely road closures around the lake.
Free use of VRR regional transit on race day (fare zone C, 2nd class)
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
Bib is at the tent near the start and finish at Seaside Beach.
Organizers recommend collecting it the day before if possible to reduce race-day congestion.
Attach the tag from bib to your bag and drop it at the bag tent behind the finish.
If you're using personal drinks, leave them in the designated box in the Packet Pickup area.
The venue address is Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße 384, Essen.
From Essen Hauptbahnhof, take the S6 to Essen-Hügel and walk.
The participation confirmation from the organizers serves as a public transit ticket within the designated VRR zone on race day.
Drivers can use the designated parking around the start/finish or on Lerchenstraße.
The changing tent is at Seaside Beach, and toilets are at the start/finish, on course and at the relay exchange points.
Showers are in a separate regatta house: women use the sports hall and men use the municipal regatta house.
The relay exchange at Haus Scheppen on the other side of the lake is served by a race boat shuttle from the Strandbad pier,
so check which boat matches your leg.
Times are local to Essen. Check the latest official information before the race.
