The Nepalgunj Marathon is a road race held in Nepalgunj, a city on Nepal’s southwestern Terai plain.

It is the administrative centre of Banke District, which borders Uttar Pradesh in India,

and was founded in 2015 to commemorate the peace agreement that ended Nepal’s civil war.

A full member of AIMS, the event offers full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km races.

All four are officially course, with separate student and team races also held.

Course follows almost entirely flat roads through central Nepalgunj, with very little elevation change.

Gopi Chandra Parki, the 2019 South Asian Games 5,000m gold medallist,

described this course as “better than the Berlin Marathon” and set the course record of 2:18:59 at the 2020 race.

Santosh Shrestha, the women’s half marathon winner, has also praised the quality of course.

The event is held between late November and early December each year.

Alongside four adult races, it includes student and team events, giving it the character of a festival involving the wider local community.

Nepalgunj's local transport relies on cycle-rickshaws and three-wheeled tempos (increasingly electric) for short trips, plus taxis for longer ones.

Fares are largely negotiable/unmetered —

cycle-rickshaw fares are 'not always fixed,' and taxi meters commonly don't work, requiring price negotiation before departure.

No card-based ticketing, ride-hailing app coverage, or contactless fare system was found specific to Nepalgunj.

Late November marks the end of the monsoon and the start of the dry season in Nepalgunj.

Highs are around 28°C and lows can fall to about 10°C, making this a good time to avoid the heat and monsoon humidity typical of the Terai Plain.
