THE DREAM
The Paris Marathon established its current 42.195 km course in 1976, with roots reaching back to the 1896 Tour de Paris, which attracted 191 participants.
Held each year on a Sunday in April, it had long been capped at around 50,000 entrants;
in 2024, 53,899 runners finished, making it France’s largest running event and one of the world’s five major marathons.
The race starts on the Champs-Élysées, passing the Louvre, Place de la Bastille,
and the Bois de Vincennes before following the Seine past Île de la Cité and the Pont Neuf.
It then passes through the Trocadéro aid station, facing the Eiffel Tower, before runners meet the finish on Avenue Foch.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“It was a truly wonderful morning to enjoy running!”
After recovering from the Ecotrail, I ran my sixth marathon without putting pressure on myself to chase a time. I enjoyed sightseeing in Paris and sharing the experience and encouragement with other runners, but the riverside tunnels and the gradual climb in the second half felt long and tough.

C’était une très belle matinée de course à pied !
Read the original on Mangeurdecailloux.com“Official finish time: 4:30:08”I took part with the goal of finishing after taking 3 weeks off training because of a tendon injury and catching a cold on race day. I experienced the ups and downs of the start corral, aid station, sports drink and course, as well as the tunnel, and finished in 4 hours 30 minutes 8 seconds.
“In total, I ate 7 Maurten gels during the race, spaced out by 4 or 5 kms (~20 minutes).”I realized the bag-drop location late and moved to a later starting group. The ups and downs through the tunnel in the latter stages were difficult, while the support at Bastille and Bir-Hakeim provided strong motivation.
“I really enjoyed running in Paris, seeing other runners, hearing their breathing, and exchanging words of encouragement.”
I did not state my exact finishing time in the article. Rather than chasing a time, I enjoyed the sights of Paris, the other runners, and the atmosphere created by the supporters. I said that Bois de Vincennes was quiet, while the banks of the Seine and the climbs in the latter part of the race were difficult.

J’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à courir dans Paris, à observer les autres coureurs, écouter les respirations, échanger des petits mots d’encouragement, des sourires.
Read the original on Mangeurdecailloux.com“The atmosphere is truly magical, and incredible on most of the course.”I missed the 3-hour mark by 16 seconds in my first marathon, but I finished without injury by running the first half steadily and increasing my pace in the second half. I said that the uphill sections and forested areas in the second half of the course felt more difficult because there were fewer spectators.
“The supporters along the sidelines were very engaged, which gave a lot of energy for the runners.”I finished my first marathon in 4 hours 02 minutes 25 seconds. I experienced early congestion, narrowing roads, a tunnel along the Seine, and a long uphill stretch, but I kept running to the finish with the support of the spectators and a late acceleration.
“Even so, I keep going.”
In a wave without pacer, I managed my three-hour pace on my own. I found the rerouted section due to the Seine's water level comfortable, but slowed down because of the hills and fatigue in the second half, and passed finish at 3 hours 2 minutes.

Je m'accroche pourtant.
Read the original on Kikourou“I was happy to finish my marathon in 3h50:36.”I finished my first marathon in 3 hours 50 minutes 36 seconds. I started conservatively to create negative split, and although I encountered a lack of toilets and large crowds, I avoided hitting the wall and increased my pace at the end.
“This is the happiest I’ve ever felt in my life!”A runner with visual impairment and a connective tissue disorder completed their first marathon in 5 hours 23 minutes 55 seconds. After running steadily to 37 km, they alternated between walking and running through the forest section, but felt intense joy with the support of family and friends.
“What an epic way to see the historic sights of Paris!”I wrote that the race route was convenient because the course passed Paris landmarks and my hotel was within walking distance. The later city sections were narrow and crowded, making it difficult to maintain pace, and I finished in 3 hours 59 minutes 26 seconds.
“It was probably one of the most exhilarating marathons I’ve ever run.”I came to Paris alone for my first overseas marathon, waited in a long line at the expo, and ran the course from the Arc de Triomphe through tunnels and the city. I enjoyed the crowd support and city views but did not disclose my exact time.
“It was the most scenic race I’ve ever experienced.”I ran with a friend past the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, the parks and the Seine. The lighting and music in the tunnel and the spectators gathered close to the course were impressive, and I finished in 3 hours 27 minutes 36 seconds.

The race starts on Avenue des Champs-Élysées, dropping downhill around Place de la Concorde before turning onto Rue de Rivoli.
It passes the Louvre, circles Place de la Bastille, and follows Boulevard Soult into the Bois de Vincennes,
where a long loop through the park sends the field back toward the heart of the city.
The halfway point comes on Rue de Charenton.
From there, the course follows the Seine, passing Île de la Cité and running beneath the Pont Neuf through a series of tunnels.
A major aid station—paired with a foot-massage stop—is set up at Trocadéro, directly across the river from the Eiffel Tower.
The route continues along the Seine before turning east through the Bois de Boulogne, emerging for a final 200 metres that finish on Avenue Foch.
Wheelchair races take place alongside the running field on the same course.

Direct 'tap and go' with a contactless bank card is not available network-wide on the Paris metro.
Buses are already partially equipped, with full Paris and inner-suburb bus coverage targeted by the end of August 2026.

A Navigo Easy card can't be shared between travelers -- one per person.
You can also skip the physical card entirely and buy/store tickets in the Ile-de-France Mobilites or Bonjour RATP phone app.

The modern Paris Marathon dates to 1976 and takes place on a Sunday each April.
It is organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation and capped at 50,000 entrants.
Its predecessor dates back further: the 1896 Tour de Paris Marathon drew 191 runners over roughly 40km from Paris to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine via Versailles,
with a commemorative medal awarded to everyone who finished in under four hours.
Englishman Len Hurst won in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds, earning a prize of 200 francs.
The 40km distance reflected the span between Marathon and Athens.
The now-standard 42.195km was not fixed until 1921, following the 1908 London Olympic marathon.
Record-keepers still disagree over who first ran a women’s marathon at that standard distance.
The Association of Road Racing Statisticians credits Frenchwoman Marie-Louise Ledru,
who ran 5 hours 40 minutes at the 1918 Tour de Paris, while other organisations credit Violet Piercy.
France has long required road-race competitors to carry a doctor’s certificate issued no more than a year earlier.
Paris was no exception until the 2025 edition, when organisers replaced the paper certificate with online self-certification.
Scale has become part of the race’s identity.
The 2024 edition produced 53,899 finishers, a world record at the time for the largest single-marathon field.
That record lasted only six months, until the 2024 Berlin Marathon surpassed it with 54,154 finishers in September.
