“My final time of 2:25 wasn’t a PB, but at an average pace of 6:52/km, it was my third-fastest time.”

In strong winds, torrential rain and hail, the runner abandoned the target pace and ran by feel, completing the Perth half marathon in 2 hours 25 minutes.

“Once the race started, I told myself, enjoy the race, see what you’ve got.”

Coco started slowly in the crowd at the start and gradually increased pace. The weather was clear and the sun was strong. Coco enjoyed the scenery around the lake in the second half and wrote that it was fortunate to have chosen half marathon instead of full marathon because of the sun and heat.

flat route along Mounts Bay Road beside the Swan River before passing through the Northbridge Tunnel.

Getting to the start

Optus Stadium/Perth Stadium railway station (Victoria Park Drive, Burswood) — purpose-built train/bus interchange directly at the venue, serving Fremantle, Yanchep, Armadale, Midland/Thornlie-Cockburn lines, plus buses 27/40/282 and the Yellow CAT

The current official site is perthrunningfestival.com.au (perthmarathon.com.au is no longer online). Per 2026 edition (Perth Running Festival, 11 Oct).

Note: the separate 'HBF Run for a Reason' half marathon in Perth (starts Hay St CBD) is a different event.

Getting to the finish

Optus Stadium/Perth Stadium railway station (same as start)

Course runs via Burswood Park and Swan River riverside paths, finishing inside Optus Stadium. Walking access also via Matagarup (Stadium) Footbridge from East Perth.

No dedicated shuttle needed — venue has its own dedicated Transperth train/bus station built for large event crowds.

Perth Airport, Transperth InfoCentres, and SmartRider retail outlets; card costs AUD 10, top up at add-value machines in train stations, InfoCentres, or retail outlets. Works directly at the gates

Alternative: DayRider (unlimited-day multi-modal pass) AUD 7.00 standard / AUD 3.20 concession (approx, as of Jan 2026 fare simplification) — Worth it if making 3+ separate trips in a single day (expo, shakeout run, sightseeing, race morning); otherwise per-tap contactless with daily capping is simpler. Central Perth has a Free Transit Zone (FTZ) where train travel between City West, Elizabeth Quay and Claisebrook is free -- still tap on/off.

Fares are capped daily whether using SmartRider or contactless bank card.
