Race reports: 3
MyRunningAltRan in 2024 · Finish time 58:29
“The pack never seemed to thin out.”

MyRunningAlt finished the 2024 City2Surf in 58:29. The crowded start and the long climb up Heartbreak Hill were tough, but they were pleased to finish 90 seconds faster than their goal.

Eat. Train. Laugh.Ran in 2012 · Finish time 1:20.56
“I am proud to say that I ran the entire way up without slowing down or stopping.”

The runner ran the 2012 City2Surf 14K in 1:20:56, dodging the early crowds and climbing Heartbreak Hill without stopping, and enjoyed the views on the final stretch toward Bondi and the scale of the race.

James NipperessFinish time 43:31
“I really made myself suffer even though I wasn't moving as fast as I would have liked in the end.”

James Nipperess took part in City2Surf for the first time and finished fourth overall in 43:31. He found out firsthand how tough Heartbreak Hill is late in the race, and said that next time he'd start more conservatively and pick up the pace on the downhills.

We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

More details

Getting to the start

Hyde Park, Sydney CBD

Official site confirms start in Hyde Park, Sydney CBD (the race's long-documented start is on William Street beside Hyde Park). As one of the world's largest fun runs, detailed transport info is normally well documented closer to race day.

Getting to the finish

Bondi Beach

Finish and Event Village at Bondi Beach; uncollected baggage must be picked up by 2:00pm race day, per official site.

Start shuttle

Official site states race entry includes 'included public transport' for participants on race day, but specific train-station names/routes were not retrievable — fuller logistics indicated to be in the official 2026 event app.

Transit card

Opal card

2,000+ retailers across NSW (look for the Opal sign) including many newsagents, Woolworths supermarkets, and 7-Eleven stores, at the two airport train stations, some Service NSW centres, or ordered online from opal.com.au. Works directly at the gates

As of 2026, a physical Opal card isn't necessary for visitors — any contactless credit/debit card or mobile wallet gets identical fares and caps to an Opal card. Daily fare capping happens automatically: once you hit the adult cap (around $19.30 on weekdays, $9.65 on weekends), the rest of that day's travel is free — there's no separate day-pass product to buy.

Gotcha: use the exact same card or device for every tap that day — mixing your card and your phone breaks the transfer/cap linkage and can charge you extra. Overseas-issued cards may incur one foreign transaction fee per day.

Sydney uses the Opal card for trains, buses, ferries and light rail, but visitors can simply tap a contactless bank card or phone directly at the gates instead of buying a physical card. Opal cards themselves are sold and topped up at station machines, newsagents, and the airport.

A typical single adult fare runs roughly AUD 3-5 depending on distance.

READY TO RUN

From race morning to after the finish.

Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.

The start at Hyde Park is easy to reach, right beside St James and Museum stations on the Sydney Trains network.

From the finish at Bondi, return to the city by the event shuttle buses or a bus to Bondi Junction.

Crowds are heavy after the finish, so allow plenty of time for the journey back.

Using the official bag transport service is the most convenient option for your belongings.

Registration is available through the official website, with an early-registration discount.

Times are local to Sydney. Check the latest official information before the race.
