About Sendai International Half Marathon — what makes it special

ABOUT THE RACE

A day you'll remember,
long past the finish line.

The Sendai International half marathon is a half marathon held every May in Sendai, the “City of Trees” (Mori no Miyako).

Starting and finishing at Sendai City Athletics Stadium (Koshin Rubber Athlete Park Sendai),

it passes along Aoba-dori, the Aoba Castle ruins, the Hirose River and Jozenji-dori’s zelkova-lined avenue.

It is part of the Japan Premium half marathon Series,

and the 2027 event details are scheduled to be announced around November 2026, so the race date has not yet been set.

The Sendai International half marathon starts and finishes at Sendai City Athletics Stadium (Koshin Rubber Athlete Park Sendai) and makes a broad circuit of central Sendai as a course.

The route passes through central streets such as Aoba-dori,

historic areas including the Aoba Castle ruins and the Hirose River, and Jozenji-dori, where zelkova trees form a green tunnel.

Using entire broad roads is a defining feature of this course.

The first half features gentle climbs and the second half trends downhill, making it widely regarded as a course where it is easy to plan your pace.

Held in May, when the fresh greenery is at its best, the race lets you experience the “City of Trees” firsthand.

Local supporters add to the atmosphere, including the “Date Bushotai,” dressed as samurai from the Date clan,

and Sendai Suzume Odori, known from the Aoba Festival, appearing along the course.

The 2026 event had 9,000 general participants, 1,000 elite participants, 100 invited athletes and 100 wheelchair participants.

The 2027 race date and details have not yet been announced.

An official announcement is expected around November 2026, so it is safest to book flights and accommodation after the race details are released.

The time limit is 2 hours 30 minutes (as of 2026).

With little leeway for a half marathon, pace planning is essential if your goal is to finish.

The course climbs in the first half and descends in the second.

If you slow too much on the early climbs, it is difficult to make up the time later;

push too hard, however, and your legs may not hold up on the downhill section.

May brings fresh greenery and generally good running weather, although daytime temperatures can rise.

Keep in mind that the start is relatively late, around 10:00 a.m.

Registration is handled through RUNNET.

As part of the Japanese premium half marathon series, registration dates for the series are announced separately.

Times are local to Sendai. Check the latest official information before the race.
