Why you dream of this race

THE DREAM

About Stramilano — what makes it special

ABOUT THE RACE

A day you'll remember,
long past the finish line.

The Stramilano half marathon is a World Athletics Label race held every March in Milan, Italy, and organized by the Stramilano running club.

It's famous as the race where Kenya's Moses Tanui became the first to break one hour in half marathon history,

running 59:47 in 1993, and where Paul Tergat set a world record of 59:17 in 1998.

It has since grown into a large running festival,

with the 21.097 km half marathon alongside 10 km and 5 km (Stramilanina) races, and more than 62,000 people took part in 2026.

It has also received a World Athletics Heritage Plaque.

The road to your own record

Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.

When the city cheers

Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.

The trip that follows the run

Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.

Race reports: 2
Lorenzo GerliRan in 2015 · Finish time 2:06:33
“From 14km onward, I started to feel genuinely fatigued, perhaps more mentally than physically.”

The runner ran their first half marathon alongside a companion, dealing with early congestion and fatigue in the second half. They missed their 2-hour goal but ran to the finish and completed the race.

Original quote

Al km 14 ho iniziato a sentire veramente fatica, forse più psicologica che fisica.

Running FlowRan in 2015 · Finish time 1:37:27
“In the hardest section, I fought the urge to walk or stop to catch my breath.”

Aiming to break 95 minutes at the 2015 Stramilano half marathon, the runner started too fast and saw the pace drop from 12km. Resisting the urge to walk, the runner reached the stadium in 1:37:27 and eased the disappointment by laughing with friends.

Getting to the finish

Same as start - Piazza Castello, base of Sforza Castle. Metro M1 Cairoli/Cadorna, Metro M2 Lanza

Half Marathon starts and finishes at the same location, Piazza Castello.

Transit card

RicaricaMi

Automatic ticket machines at metro stations (red machines), newsstands and tobacconists (edicole/tabaccherie), and other authorized retailers. Works directly at the gates

Alternative: ATM biglietto giornaliero (24-hour pass) / 3-day pass €7.60 (24h) / €13 (3 consecutive days) — Only worth buying in advance if you know you'll take 4+ rides in a day or plan to pay in cash — with a contactless bank card the same €7.60 daily cap is applied automatically after your 4th tap. Milan was the first Italian city to launch open-loop contactless ticketing (June 2018), and it now covers all metro lines plus ATM trams, buses and trolleybuses.

Always tap the same card/device to enter and exit — mixing cards on a single trip breaks the fare calculation. A single 90-minute ticket costs €2.20 if bought separately.

RicaricaMi (the physical rechargeable card) is best for residents or multi-week stays; short-trip visitors don't need it.
