BismarckTHE DREAM
The race starts at the North Dakota State Capitol grounds and returns to the same spot.
Full marathon is entirely on paved roads and runs along the Missouri River.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“At Mile 21 my legs started to experience their first cramps.”The runner ran the same 13.1-mile course of the Bismarck Marathon twice. The runner's pace dropped on the late climbs, and the runner began experiencing cramps at mile 21, forcing the runner to walk or stop at times. The runner held on to the end and finished in 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 54 seconds, placing 18th overall.
“There were sufficient water stops with good volunteers but sporadic crowd support.”At the Bismarck half marathon, the runner ran in cool weather on mostly flat paths. Supplies were adequate, but scenery and support felt rather unremarkable; the runner finished in 1 hour 59 minutes.
We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

Cut-off
2026 Bismarck Marathon official course closure: September 19 at 14:00 CST. Based on the official 07:30 start, the course time limit is 6 hours 30 minutes.
The Bismarck Marathon starts at the North Dakota State Capitol and follows the Missouri River,
linking the riverfront with the city’s older residential neighborhoods.
The current course follows a revised version of a newly created route, with both the start and finish on the Capitol grounds.
The official course description highlights a relatively flat, fast out-and-back section.
After heading south through the city alongside the river, you return toward the finish along a route that alternates between roads and riverside paths.
Riverwood Drive, the Cottonwood walking path and the Riverfront Trail are key landmarks in the riverfront route described in the course information.
After leaving the cityscape around the Capitol for the river and parks, you head back toward the finish.
The full marathon, half marathon and 10 km are USA Track & Field-certified course,
and the full marathon result can be used as a Boston Marathon qualifying time.
The 5 km, marathon relay and Kids Run are also part of the event, bringing together solo long-distance runners, teams and families.
The event is organized by a nonprofit and focuses on supporting local charities connected with youth, health and wellness.
The organizers distribute donations among several organizations each year and aim to provide a health-focused event that benefits residents and local businesses.
Running the Bismarck Marathon lets you explore a city along the Missouri River while taking part in a local fundraising effort.

Packet pickup traditionally takes place on the Friday before the race; the 2026 location and hours will be posted on the official website closer to race day.
Start/finish is at the North Dakota State Capitol grounds; no specific bus route to the Capitol was found in race materials.
On-site Capitol-grounds parking is limited and fills quickly; organizers publish a parking map with designated spaces (e.g., near the DOT lot west of the Sakakawea statue). Bismarck has no passenger rail or subway; the race relies entirely on car access and an official Capitol-grounds parking map to manage limited spaces.
Same location — North Dakota State Capitol grounds.
Parking is not allowed along the main Capitol loop road to keep it clear for runners; designated spectator/runner lots are marked separately.
No dedicated transit card system; Bismarck, ND is a car-access rural venue. Cash or card works fine for parking, tolls, or local taxis/rideshare, but there's no citywide fare card to worry about.
