“Eventually did wrap my head around the PR and am pretty proud of my time. But those 11 seconds are haunting.”

Heat and loose gravel drained this runner late in the 2024 Jim Thorpe Marathon, but a push through the finish produced a personal best of 3 hours, 11 seconds. Missing the sub-3-hour goal by 11 seconds stung, yet the new best remained a source of pride.

Bill Tung mixed running with short walks when the pace slipped and cramps threatened late in the 2024 Jim Thorpe Marathon. Finishing in 4 hours, 45 minutes cut 35 minutes from his previous two marathons and highlighted the need for more training before the next challenge.

Getting to the start

Jim Thorpe Train Station (Half Marathon/Super Two-Fer) OR White Haven, PA reached via scenic train/shuttle (Full Marathon)

Half Marathon (Saturday) starts at the Jim Thorpe Train Station parking lot. The point-to-point Full Marathon (Sunday) starts in White Haven, PA, reached either via free shuttle bus from a Rte 940 Park-and-Ride or via the historic train departing Jim Thorpe Station at 6:30am.

Full marathon: for the 7:15 start, park and take the shuttle; for the 8:00 start, ride the 6:30 scenic train from Jim Thorpe Station to the start.

Organizer-provided free shuttle bus runs between the Rte 940 Park-and-Ride in White Haven and the marathon start; free off-site parking with shuttle also available at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

READY TO RUN

The 2027 race is held over two days, April 24–25, with three events: the half marathon,

the full marathon (a Boston Marathon qualifying-certified course), and the 7-mile.

Based on recent editions, the half marathon starts at 8:00 AM on Saturday from the Jim Thorpe Train Station parking lot and follows a flat,

fast rail-trail course (a former railway) into Lehigh Gorge State Park, running alongside the Lehigh River with a section that crosses it.

There is no same-day bib pickup on race day;

it can only be collected the day before, on Friday, from noon to 6:00 PM at Muggles' Mug Coffee Shoppe (79 Broadway, Jim Thorpe).

Participants unable to visit in person must choose the option to receive their bib by mail in advance.

Full marathon participants receive their bib separately from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday in front of the Jim Thorpe Train Station.

Registration is through RunSignUp, and club member discounts are said to be applied automatically at checkout.
