THE DREAM
Transvulcania is a 73 km mountain ultra that crosses La Palma in the Canary Islands from the lighthouse at its southern tip to a town in the west.
It starts on the coast at sea level (0 m), follows the volcanic ridges up to the island's highest point,
Roque de los Muchachos (just over 2,400 m), and then drops back down to the sea.
The race has been held since 2009, and the 17th edition takes place on 8 May 2027.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“The entire town was out on the streets blasting music at 6:45 in the morning, cheering wildly and giving high fives to all the runners.”American trail runner Jamil Coury wrote that the start in the dark in front of the lighthouse was close to a scrum. The first climb was through deep volcanic sand, which made every step harder work, and the climb from Tazacorte to Los Llanos was still waiting at the end. Coury finished in 10 hours 7 minutes.
“The support given by the locals was nothing short of amazing”Irish runner David Caulfield wrote that the trip from Dublin to La Palma went via three other islands, and that a 3 am bus took runners to the lighthouse start. The narrow trail just after the start got congested, and after struggling in midday heat of 30°C, Caulfield passed the finish at around 10 pm.
“the whole village was lining the long main street, an early morning fiesta, the atmosphere was like a carnival”British club runner Giles Hawking wrote that when the early-morning bus dropped runners at the lighthouse, sand whipped up by the sea wind made things hard. Hawking nearly gave up in the blazing sun on the exposed sections above 2,000 m but recovered at the aid stations, and after the endless descent and the climb through the banana plantations finished in 14 hours 9 minutes 52 seconds, 882nd out of 1,721.

Transvulcania's stage is the whole island.
The ultra starts at 6:00 am from the Fuencaliente lighthouse at the island's southern tip and crosses the island to the north-west entirely on the long-distance trails GR 130 and GR 131.
The early section is the ‘Ruta de los Volcanes’, covered in black volcanic sand that your feet sink into;
after the 7 km mark at the village of Los Canarios come Canary pine forest and volcanic ridges.
The only stretches through towns are a short one just after the start, the port of Tazacorte and the finish town.
The heart of the course is the climb along the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park to the island's highest point, Roque de los Muchachos (50.7 km).
From there it drops in one go to the port of Tazacorte at 2 m above sea level,
then climbs again between ravines and banana plantations to finish in the main square of Los Llanos de Aridane.
Total elevation gain is 4,350 m.
The event is organised by the island government of La Palma, and the same week also features a marathon (43.2 km), a half marathon (24.8 km), a vertical,
the 12K Light that is new for 2027, and the Joëlette and Desafío categories in which runners with disabilities take part alongside other runners.
At the 2026 edition, the records fell in all eight categories, and David Sinclair won the ultra in 6:32:24, taking 19 minutes off the course record.
Demand is huge: 2027 entries passed 2,000 in a single day, and the main races moved to waiting lists.
This may change for the next edition.

6–8 May 2026
Faro de Fuencaliente (organizer buses only)
No public transport to the lighthouse before dawn; organizer buses (reservation required) left at 03:45-04:45 from Santa Cruz de La Palma bus station, Los Cancajos, Puerto/Ayuntamiento de Tazacorte, Los Llanos bus station, El Paso, Puerto Naos, Los Canarios and partner hotels (2026 schedule). Fly into La Palma Airport (SPC) at Brena Baja on the east coast; many visitors connect via Tenerife or other Canary islands.
Start and finish are on opposite sides of the island, so book the organizer bus (included in the entry fee per the 2027 regulation) and stay in Los Llanos de Aridane, Tazacorte or Puerto Naos. Bus times shown are from the official shuttle page and may change for 2027.
Estación de guaguas de Los Llanos de Aridane
Ultra finish is at Plaza de España in the town centre of Los Llanos de Aridane; return buses to the stops ran at 19:00, 22:00 and 00:30. A free shuttle (no booking) links the marathon finish and half finish to Los Llanos.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
The first thing to sort out is transport.
The start and finish are on opposite sides of the island, so book the organiser's bus in advance.
In 2026 the ultra buses left between 3:45 and 4:45 am from stops around the island and from partner hotels.
Staying in the finish town of Los Llanos de Aridane, or in Tazacorte or Puerto Naos, makes the return easier.
You must collect your bib in person with your passport between 5 and 7 May;
it is not handed out at the start line on race day.
Mandatory kit: a hydration system holding at least 1 litre, a headlamp of at least 200 lumens,
a survival blanket, a fully charged mobile phone (not in flight mode), a collapsible cup and a whistle.
There are no cups at the aid stations, so make sure you carry one.
At the El Reventón aid station you must leave with 1 litre of water to last until Pico de la Cruz.
Cold- or hot-weather kit may be added depending on the forecast, so check the notice 72 hours before the race.
In the ultra and the half marathon, carrying poles in your hands during the first 7.67 km (up to the Los Canarios aid station) means disqualification.
The narrow trail early on gets congested, so don't rush from the start.
Time limit are El Pilar 11:00, Roque de los Muchachos 17:00, Puerto de Tazacorte 21:00 and the finish 22:00.
The ridges above 2,000 m have no shade and the sun is strong,
and with such a big altitude range the sea breeze at the start feels very different from the temperature up top.
The long descent from Los Muchachos to the sea takes a lot out of your legs, so save energy for the second half.
Times are local to Los Llanos de Aridane. Check the latest official information before the race.
