THE DREAM
A 42.195 km mountain marathon that starts in Zegama, a small village in Gipuzkoa in the Spanish Basque Country, and loops around the Aratz and Aizkorri ranges.
Part of the Golden Trail World Series, it is famous for the crowds that pack the climb at Sancti Spiritu.
With only 500 places, entrants are chosen by lottery every year.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“This climb is where everyone gets the most emotional. It's the hardest and most iconic section.”
An amateur runner from Galicia, still recovering from a respiratory infection, took on Zegama for the first time and finished in 6 hours 4 minutes. The post closes with gratitude for the energy of the crowds, the hard climbs and the descent to the finish, and for fulfilling a long-held dream.
Quoted from the original · translated
Es en esta subida, donde todos nos emocionamos más, es la más dura, la más emblemática.
Read the original on Carreras de Montaña (Mayayo)“The line of spectators at the finish line was unimaginable.”She led the women's race until halfway but was overtaken by two runners on a technical descent. A late push secured third place, 3 seconds ahead of fourth.

Runners start · local time — Marathon Sunday 09:00 start, junior trail Sunday 10:30, Vertical Kilometer Friday from 16:00 (2026 edition)
Zegama-Aizkorri is a 42.195 km loop course that starts in the village of Zegama at 296 m above sea level,
passes the Otzaurte pass, crosses the Aratz massif and the Aizkorri range, and returns to the village.
Total elevation change, uphill and downhill combined, is 5,472 m, and the highest point is Aketegi at 1,551 m.
Beech forest trails, steep rocky sections and high pastures alternate, and roughly half of the surface is technical, making it a demanding course.
The course measurement is certified by technical staff of the European and Spanish mountain federations.
The climb from mark Sancti Spiritu at 19.6 km to the summit of Aizkorri at 22.6 km,
where runners push through dense walls of spectators on both sides, is the symbol of the race.
The time limit is 8 hours, with a time limit at each cut-off point along the way.
The men's course is 3 hours 36 minutes 40 seconds, set by Kilian Jornet in 2022.
The women's record was rewritten in 2026 by debutante Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) in 4 hours 8 minutes 9 seconds,
and in the same year Elhousine Elazzaoui (Morocco) won the men's race for the second year in a row in 3 hours 45 minutes 7 seconds.
The 2027 race, the 26th edition, takes place on Sunday 6 June;
the 13th Vertical Kilometer is held two days earlier on Friday, and a junior trail for ages 16–18 runs on race day.
In 2026 the race also received Silver certification under the Green Trail concept.

This may change for the next edition.
Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
Zegama (main square)
Start and finish are in the village of Zegama. Regional bus line GO01 connects Beasain and Zegama; Beasain has a commuter/regional rail station.
Zegama is a small village in Gipuzkoa with very limited lodging and heavy race-day traffic. Nearest airports are Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastián and Bilbao; most visitors drive or reach Beasain by train, then take bus GO01. On race morning the organizers run spectator buses from the Zegama square to the train halt (06:30-08:00) for the walk to Sancti Spiritu, and a shuttle from the Suazarreta car park to the Otzaurte pass from 06:00 (2026 edition).
Zegama (main square)
Same as start; the course is a loop returning to the village.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
The biggest cut-off point is the lottery.
Pre-registration for the 2027 marathon opens on 11 January at 12:00 and runs until the 22nd, only on the official registration platform;
applications by phone or email are not accepted.
The pre-registration fee is 1 euro and the draw is on 12 February.
First-time applicants receive one lottery number,
and each time you miss out in a previous draw you get one extra number the following year, so applying steadily every year pays off.
If drawn, you must pay the Entry fee (75 euros for the 2026 edition) and have your eligibility confirmed before your place is final.
If you withdraw by email at least 15 days before the race, you can get the Entry fee back.
For the 2026 edition, the bib had to be collected in person with ID at the school gym on Saturday 17:00–19:00 or in the church cloister on Sunday 7:00–8:30.
Mandatory gear is a windproof jacket, a cup for drinks and a thermal blanket.
There are 13 aid stations plus the finish, offering water, fruit, bars and energy drinks, but without a cup it is hard to get drinks, so be sure to bring one.
The time limit are fairly tight, so plan your pace around Ultzama at 8.7 km in 1 hour 25 minutes,
Sancti Spiritu at 19.6 km in 3 hours 15 minutes and Aketegi at 23.2 km in 4 hours 30 minutes.
Mountain weather changes quickly, with frequent mud and strong winds, so choose shoes with good grip.
Rubbish may only be dropped in bins within 100 m of an aid station;
breaking this rule means disqualification.
The finish area has bag storage, showers, massage and medical support.
The village gets very crowded on race day, so book accommodation early,
and if family members are coming to cheer, check the spectator bus and walking route to Sancti Spiritu in advance.
Times are local to Zegama. Check the latest official information before the race.
