The Singapore Marathon Starts at 4:30 a.m.

The BYD Singapore International Marathon starts at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 6, with a 7-hour cutoff and a finish at the National Stadium. Local marathon spots are sold out, but international entries remainโ€”and on half marathon day, there are no early-morning trains at all.

At 3:37 a.m.

on December 7, 2025, outside Singapore's F1 Pit Building, the runner behind the YouTube channel โ€œprischewdotcomโ€ switched on the camera. โ€œThere's less than one hour to go to flag off,โ€ the runner said.

โ€œI just hope that today is going to be a cloudy day and not too hot.โ€ That year, the marathon started at 4:30 a.

m. and finished at the Padang.

A lot changes in 2026. The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon becomes the BYD Singapore International Marathon, and the race will be run by a new company that Sport Singapore picked in December 2025.

Once a Saturday-and-Sunday event, it spreads over three days for the first time, December 4โ€“6, and the finish line moves from the Padang to the National Stadium. In 2025, the trains started running later than the gun; this time, on marathon day, they run free from 2:30 a.

m. Up to 52,000 runners will race over the three days, and all 9,000 local marathon spots sold out at the end of August.

What hasn't changed is the start time: 4:30 a.m.

1Why the Singapore Marathon Starts at 4:30 a.m.

BYD Singapore International Marathon

The average December temperature in Singapore is 26.3ยฐC (about 79ยฐF). On race day in 2025, the runner behind the Japanese YouTube channel โ€œ้ชจๅคชใƒฉใƒณใƒŠใƒผใ—ใ‚‹ใ—ใ‚‹ใผใ†ใšโ€ shared these numbers: โ€œIt's 25 degrees [77ยฐF] right now, and the humidity I was worried about is 89 percent.โ€ With conditions that tough, the runner added, a fast time wasn't likely.

That's why the race starts before sunrise. The marathon goes off at 4:30 a.m.

with a 7-hour cutoff; the half marathon also starts at 4:30 a.m., with a cutoff of 3 hours, 45 minutes.

With the move to three days, the 10K and 5K shifted to Friday evening, two days before the marathon. According to an interview in The Business Times, the new organizers built the course and schedule to reduce the risk of heat illness and will station more than 200 medically qualified runners on the course. โ€œWhatever we do, it cannot be at the expense of safety,โ€ said CEO Leon Lai.

Counting from the gun, a 5-hour finish means crossing the line at 9:30 a.m., and a 6-hour finish at 10:30 a.

m. Start farther back in the corrals and you'll finish that much laterโ€”and that last hour or two will be run after the sun is up.

2Free 2:30 a.m. Trainsโ€”But Not on Half Marathon Saturday

BYD Singapore International Marathon

In 2025, the prischewdotcom runner was already at the start by 3:37 a.m., and the area was packed with early arrivals.

How did everyone get there? That year's official race guide warned that trains would start running after the gun and told runners to find other transport. This year, on marathon day, Sunday, December 6, parts of the North-South Line, East-West Line, and Circle Line will run from 2:30 a.

m. at 15-minute intervals. Rides in that window are free for everyone: the fare gates will be left open, so you can walk through without tapping a card.

The last free trains from Bukit Batok, Jurong East, Tanah Merah, and Serangoon leave at 4:30 a.m., and only a handful of designated stations open early.

Check first whether the station near your hotel is on that list. What about the half marathon on Saturday? The official transport guide states flatly that there are no early-morning trains on December 5โ€”even though the half also starts at 4:30 a.

m. The alternatives it offers are ride-hailing and paid shuttle buses from ShareTransport. The shuttle costs S$12 per person on December 5 and 6, with a fixed number of seats for each departure slot.

The official website still lists the 2026 start location as โ€œto be announced.โ€ So if you're running the half, either book a hotel within walking distance once the start is announced, or lock in a shuttle seat first.

3The 2025 Marathon Course: Past Marina Barrage to East Coast Park

BYD Singapore International Marathon

What does the course look like? The 2026 course map hasn't been released yet, so we'll follow the 42 kilometers the runner behind โ€œprischewdotcomโ€ covered in 2025. When the gun went off, everyone bolted.

The prischewdotcom runner held back: โ€œWe had to remind ourselves that it is a long journey ahead. So do not start too fast.โ€ The opening kilometers wind through downtown Singapore.

At 10K, the course reaches Marina Barrage, then follows the park connector through Gardens by the Bay to East Coast Park. The park runs 10 kilometers end to end, and dawn only began to break about halfway along it. Aid was plentiful, by that account: water, sports drink, pretzels, bananas, and as many energy gels as you wanted, plus buckets of water to pour over yourself.

The runner's verdict: โ€œIn a hot and humid climate such as Singapore, you definitely need the bucket.โ€ The bridge climbs had been taken out of the course that year, the runner noted, so there were hardly any hills. Even so, plenty of people were walking at 30K.

4Singapore Marathon Entry Costs S$208โ€”With No Refunds or Transfers

BYD Singapore International Marathon

For international runners, entry fees are S$208 for the marathon, S$188 for the half marathon, S$150 for the 10K, and S$118 for the 5K. Local runners pay S$20 less in each category. There's no tiered pricing such as early-bird rates this year, so the price is the same whenever you sign up.

A 10 percent discount for Standard Chartered cards applies only to cards issued in 13 markets, and only to the first 8,000 entries. There are three things to settle on the registration page. Gear checkโ€”drop your bag at the start, collect it at the finishโ€”is a paid S$18 option that can be bought only at registration.

Because the start and finish are in different places, decide here unless you plan to run empty-handed. Your corral is shown by a letter next to your bib number and is assigned based on the estimated finish time you enter at registration; it can't be changed later. Starting from a different corral can get you disqualified.

Last is RunFlex. The race doesn't allow refunds, deferrals to a future edition, or transfers to another runner. Only those who bought RunFlex at registration can cancel for any reason through November 27 and get 80 percent back, minus the RunFlex fee.

If you're flying in from abroad, this boxโ€”available only on the registration pageโ€”is the only cancellation option the race offers.

540% of Runners Are First-Timersโ€”and There's Ice Cream Soda at the Aid Stations

BYD Singapore International Marathon

According to The Business Times, about 40 percent of marathon and half marathon participants are running that distance for the first time, and more than 60 percent of those are Singaporean. Registered runners come from close to 100 countries. With these first-timers in mind, the new organizers say they'll set up food zones along the course with local snacks such as curry puffs, and stock the aid stations with sweet drinks like ice cream soda in addition to water and sports drink.

โ€œThere are many people taking part for the first time, and they are maybe not used to running for five or six hours. Sugar can give them that fuel to complete the race,โ€ Lai explained. If you're picking this as your first marathon, the 7-hour cutoff is fairly generous.

But miss it, and you won't get a finisher medal, the marathon finisher T-shirt, or an official time. In 2025, the postrace festival area had free coconuts, bananas, and ice creamโ€”and the prischewdotcom runner said it wasn't until after the race that it became clear how much those were needed.

6Gold Label for 14 Years: What's Next for the Singapore Marathon

BYD Singapore International Marathon

The Singapore Marathon earned World Athletics Gold Label status in 2012, and since 2019 it has been the only road race in Southeast Asia to hold that label. The new organizer, SG International Marathon, is a joint venture between Betterment Sports and Score Sports; in December 2025, Sport Singapore handed it the 2026 and 2027 editions. According to The Business Times, Lai's goal is to one day turn the race into a World Marathon Major.

The first step is a Platinum Label. โ€œThere is no Platinum race in South-east Asia, and we certainly want to be the first.โ€ It isn't a road the organizers can travel alone, Lai addedโ€”the whole country has to pull together.

Is anything lost with the change of organizer? According to the official FAQ, cumulative distance is no longer being tracked, so the 300KM Club and the 500KM VIP Programme have ended, and the Double Up Challenge won't be held in 2026. New this year is the Crew Challenge: teams of four each run the marathon and are ranked by combined time.

For regulars who've come back year after year to build up their mileage, it's a disappointing year.

Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon

Editor's pick

If you're heading to Singapore this year, make it the marathon. International marathon entries are still open, but they're listed only as โ€œremaining spotsโ€ with no closing date, so there's no telling when they'll goโ€”and the free 2:30 a.m.

trains run only on marathon day. The half marathon is a different story. Until the start location is announced, the only early-morning transport options on offer are shuttles and ride-hailing, so if you sign up now, it's safer to hold off on booking a hotel until the start is confirmed.

Is it a good pick for a first marathon? As far as the 7-hour cutoff goes, yes. After finishing in 2025, the prischewdotcom runner put it this way: โ€œthe marathon distance is never easy.

You really have to respect the distance.โ€ Instead of a goal time, write down the kilometer mark you want to reach before sunrise.

Bib pickup runs December 3โ€“5 at Arena Park, The Kallang, on Stadium Drive. On the last day, Saturday, December 5, final entry is at 6 p.

m., so even if you're running Sunday's marathon, you need to be in Singapore before then.
