The writer ran the Harbor Bridge during the third 4.37-mile leg of the Beach to Bay Relay, overcoming nerves and the uphill section to finish their leg in about 45 minutes.

Getting to the start

No train/subway station near the Leg 1 start (Beach Access Rd 5 & Eliff Rd, Padre Island). Nearest useful transit hub for runners is Freedom Fitness (5858 South Padre Island Dr), the pickup/dropoff point for the organizer's complimentary shuttle.

This is a point-to-point relay with 6 legs, each starting at a different location; only some legs have shuttle service (see shuttle field). Leg 1 shuttle boards 4:45-5:15am at Freedom Fitness with return service available.

No bus/train station at the finish, McCaughan Park on Shoreline Drive.

There is explicitly no shuttle bus service to or from McCaughan Park (finish/after-party venue); runners/spectators must walk, carpool, or arrange other transport.

Complimentary 'The B' shuttle buses (Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority) serve most but not all legs: Leg 1 & 2 board at Freedom Fitness (5858 South Padre Island Dr); Leg 3 boards on Security Drive (Flour Bluff, no return service, walking distance to parking); Leg 4 has no start service but return service from NAS North Gate; Leg 5 boards at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Ocean Dr) parking, 8:00-8:45am, no return (carpooling encouraged); Leg 6 has no bus service at all.

READY TO RUN

The Beach to Bay Relay is regarded as the largest Relay in the United States, having been held annually since 1976.

More than 2,000 teams take part each year, attracting runners from overseas, including Kenya, the United Kingdom, and Mexico.

There are three participation options: a six-person relay, with each team member covering three of the six legs;

a two-person relay;

and a solo marathon in which one runner completes the full marathon alone.

The start time is reported to be 7:00 AM.

Based on the previous year,

online registration closed at midnight on April 30, while the six-person relay Entry fee followed an early-bird pricing structure that increased in stages to as much as $300 shortly before registration closed in early June.

For team registration, each team member must register separately using a different email address.
