“I completed course, known as the hottest and toughest race in the country, and came away without an injury—just fatigue and exhaustion from the sun.”

Tammanoon Soparat entered the 2018 Laguna Phuket full marathon short on sleep and training. From 26 km, the heat forced him to alternate walking and running, but he finished in 7:09:38, 22 minutes before the time limit.

“The race was well organised, and there was no shortage of water. From the 5 km mark onward, sports drink and watermelon were also provided continuously.”

The writer ran the full marathon at the 2014 Laguna Phuket International Marathon. The race started at 4:30 a.m., and the early going felt comfortable, but the climbs after 22K and the heat made things suddenly much harder. Water, sports drink, and watermelon were all plentiful, and they held on to the finish in the back half while worrying about cramps.

“I finished at a relaxed 1 hour 7 minutes.”

The runner had gastroenteritis at the 2012 Laguna Phuket Marathon, so they ran the 10.5km course instead of the half marathon and finished in 1 hour 7 minutes. The course was flat and scenic, and the aid stations, fruit, sponges, free shuttle and post-race massage were well organised. Although the runner was not feeling well, they described it as an experience that allowed them to enjoy Phuket's scenery and a holiday at the same time.

We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

Stations & transport near the venue

Just tap your contactless Visa/Mastercard/JCB bank card or phone (Apple Pay/Google Pay) directly on the Phuket Smart Bus — no local card or app needed. For tuk-tuks and songthaews outside the Smart Bus network, bring cash.

Getting to the start

Laguna Grove, Lagoon Road, inside the Laguna Phuket resort complex, Choeng Thale.

Essentially one main access road (Srisoonthorn Road / Route 4025) serves the whole area,

so traffic converges quickly race morning -- arrive with a large time buffer if not staying inside Laguna.

Per prior edition: arrive 1+ hour before start and follow marshal directions to designated parking.

Getting to the finish

Same venue as start, Laguna Grove.

More details

Booking accommodation inside the Laguna Phuket complex is strongly recommended given the single-road access constraint.

Detailed road-closure map is per prior edition -- official pages returned 403 during this check.

More details

Free shuttle buses and boats run between each of the 8 Laguna Phuket hotels and the start/finish venue for guests staying within the complex.

No shuttle for runners staying outside Laguna (e.g. Patong, Kata) -- expect 30-45+ min drive plus congestion on the single access road.

More details

Phuket Smart Bus (Route 1: Airport-Patong-Rawai, flat 100 baht;

Bus Terminal-Patong 50 baht) accepts tap-and-go EMV contactless cards, QR/PromptPay, or cash.

This only covers the Smart Bus network — other local transport (songthaews, tuk-tuks, taxis) is cash-based with negotiated or fixed fares.

READY TO RUN

From race morning to after the finish.

Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.

The race takes place every year in mid-June, before Phuket's rainy season is fully underway.

Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate and is hot and humid year-round.

The dry season runs from December to March, while the rest of the year is classified as the rainy season.

Because of these climate conditions, the race is held over two days, with events scheduled around sunset and in the early morning.

The 5km, 10km and 2km Junior Run take place in the late afternoon on Saturday, while half marathon,

full marathon and the relay start at around 3:00 am on Sunday so that participants can finish before the heat becomes more intense.

The race is AIMS-certified and a Boston Marathon qualifying course.

The baggage storage area near the start allows each participant to check one bag.

After the finish, simple food such as noodles and rice is provided along with fruit.

Aid station are placed approximately every 2–2.5km, and bananas and watermelon are also available at full marathon and half marathon,

so plan these supplies together with the personal nutrition you normally use.

Times are local to Phuket. Check the latest official information before the race.
