“Running here is a great joy. I was overwhelmed by the thought that my family was watching me somewhere, and I managed pace during the race so I could finish. The most important thing was finishing first among the Colombian runners and enjoying course.”

The Colombian representative described the emotions of racing in a hometown event watched by family and said that, after managing pace with the priority of finishing, they were the first domestic runner to cross finish in 2 hours 19 minutes 13 seconds.

Original quote

The Medellín Marathon is Colombia's most storied marathon, set in the Valle de Aburrá, an Andean valley at 1,495 m above sea level.

The start and finish are both in downtown Medellín.

The course follows the main avenues of the Aburrá Valley, alternating between wide tree-lined boulevards,

riverside paths, and climbs that show off the city's steep terrain.

It passes through a range of neighborhoods and scenic stretches, with views of the Andes all around.

Because of the altitude, it feels harder than a sea-level race.

The race holds a World Athletics label and AIMS certification, and it's a Boston Marathon qualifier.

Buy a Tarjeta Cívica Eventual (the tourist/occasional-use profile) at a Metro station ticket booth or an Éxito/Jumbo/Carulla store and load it with cash — don't count on tapping a bank card, since that's still only a tiny pilot on one bus route.

More details

Sources disagree on the exact Cívica Eventual purchase price (COP 5,000-12,100 across reports, most recent around COP 11,500-12,100),

plus fare balance loaded separately;

per-trip fare is roughly COP 3,820-4,400.

A Visa/Mastercard open-payment pilot exists but is limited to six buses on one Comuna 13/Graffitour feeder route — not usable system-wide.

READY TO RUN

From race morning to after the finish.

Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.

For the 2026 race, bib pickup was only at EXPORUNNERS, held in the white and yellow pavilions of the Plaza Mayor Medellín convention center,

Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. There was no race-day or proxy pickup;

you had to bring an original photo ID (a passport for international runners) in person.

A pedestrian bridge connects the venue directly to Alpujarra metro station.

In 2026, the full marathon started on Avenida San Juan next to Parque de las Luces, the half marathon on Avenida Carabobo,

and the 10K at Parques del Río, with the finish at Parque de los Pies Descalzos in front of the EPM building.

Start corrals open at 4 a.m. and close at 4:45 a.m. for the full marathon and half marathon.

If you're late, you start from the back corral, and anyone who hasn't started within 15 minutes of the official start is disqualified.

Organizers recommend taking the metro on race day.

Parque de las Luces is right next to San Antonio and Cisneros stations.

There's an aid station with water about every 2 km, plus Gatorade at designated points.

Gear check is available.

September in Medellín runs around 16–26°C with frequent showers.

José María Córdova International Airport is in Rionegro, about 45 minutes by bus from downtown.

Times are local to Medellín. Check the latest official information before the race.
