THE DREAM
Shihezi is a city at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,
a planned city founded in 1950 through military land reclamation (屯垦) by the People's Liberation Army.
For turning barren Gobi desert into an irrigated oasis city,
it received the UN Dubai International Award for improving the living environment, which earned it the nickname "戈壁明珠" (Pearl of the Gobi).
First held in 2023, the "戈壁明珠" Shihezi Marathon takes place on October 2, 2026, with three events —
full marathon, half marathon, and Fun Run — starting and finishing at Junken Cultural Square.
The race takes its name from the city's nickname, and its course crosses the square,
which preserves the history of military reclamation, and the oasis downtown.

The race is held every year on October 2 during the National Day holiday.
Shihezi has a typical continental climate, with average October highs of 15–16°C and lows around 7°C.
Rainfall is generally light, but the 2025 race was run in the rain.
Course mixes downhills and climbs between 5.5 and 6.3km and around the 31km mark, so it is not a completely flat course.
Shihezi is about 150km from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, so most runners travel overland via Urumqi.
