The road to your own record
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.

The city you want to run becomes your next trip.

THE DREAM
Start line is in front of the Bund Bull, while finish is Shanghai Stadium.
Held annually since 1996, this World Athletics Platinum Label event features only the full marathon.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“My upper body was swaying, but amazingly I was able to maintain pace.”
Starting in Block D, the runner ran while passing the congested runners ahead. The runner increased the pace in the second half and briefly thought the goal had or had not been achieved because of the difference between the display clocks and the wave start time.

The Shanghai Marathon began in 1996 as the Shanghai International Citizens Marathon and is held every year in late fall.
It carries a World Athletics Platinum Label, the top tier, and is being assessed as China's only candidate race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
The 2026 race is on Sunday, December 6, and the marathon is the only race open to the public.
The wheelchair race, which has no public entry, starts at 6:45 a.m., and the marathon at 7 a.m.
The start line is at the plaza by the Bund Bull statue on East Zhongshan No. 1 Road on the Bund.
The course leaves the Bund and passes Nanjing Road pedestrian street, Jing'an Temple,
Huaihai Road, Xintiandi and the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China,
then heads south along the Huangpu riverside and Longteng Avenue, passing Longhua Temple and Longhua Martyrs' Cemetery.
The finish is at Xujiahui Sports Park, home of Shanghai Stadium.
It's a cross-city course that starts on the Bund, cuts through the busiest downtown streets and then follows the Huangpu River to a finish in the southwest.
In 2025 the marathon had 23,000 spots and drew 356,589 applications, a lottery success rate of 7.2 percent.
The finish closed at 1:15 p.m., meaning you had to finish within 6 hours 15 minutes of the start, with cutoffs along the way.
Drinks were served every 5km from 5km and water every 5km from 7.5km, and there were 9 energy stations from 12.5km.
Entry is limited to runners aged 20 or over as of the end of the race year.
The men's course record is 2:05:35, set by Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba in 2023.

The race is held every late autumn.
Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate, with hot and humid summers and around 21 days per year when temperatures exceed 35°C,
but this heat has passed by the time the race takes place in late autumn.
However, the influence of cold air masses from Siberia can sometimes cause overnight temperatures to drop suddenly to near freezing,
so prepare for cold conditions while waiting at the start.
During the COVID-19 situation in 2020, only full marathon was held,
the field was limited to 9,000 domestic runners, and finish was moved to the West Bund Art Center.
This illustrates that course or finish may be adjusted depending on the circumstances.
As a Platinum Label road race, the event has strict standards for record ratification.
Alongside the elite groups targeting international records, the area at the front of start line can also become crowded.
Times are local to Shanghai. Check the latest official information before the race.
