Know the course and time limit, and race day comes into focus.
Run to Remember is held at Piney Run Park in Sykesville, Maryland, USA.
It was created to remember club members who have passed away and is organised so that participants can run while thinking of someone they have lost.
The event's memorial purpose is reflected in both its name and course.
The race uses a loop course through the park's forests and meadows.
The 50 km race covers six laps, the 25 km race covers three laps, and the shorter events cover one lap.
The timed challenge records the number of laps completed within the allotted time.
Although everyone runs the same course, the conditions each participant must meet to finish depend on the race they have entered.
Parts of course offer views of the lake, with forests and meadows creating a changing landscape around each lap.
Rather than travelling towards a distant destination, you return along the same section.
If you choose a longer distance, you will pass the same paths several times.
Repeating the course within the park defines the character of this race.
The organisers prepare posters in parts of course to remember people who have passed away.
They also accept separate submissions so that you can share the story of someone you wish to remember with the event.
Part of the proceeds supports the club's youth programmes and scholarships, as well as the American Cancer Society.
It is an event where personal memories and the local club's activities come together while you run through the park's natural surroundings.
Participants completing a target distance and those accumulating laps within the time limit take part in the same purpose in their own way.
Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
Course is a 5.25-mile loop (run multiple times for the 50K) through woods and meadows around Piney Run Lake.
Rural Maryland county park, car access only — no public transit in the area.
Same as start — loop course starts/finishes at the park.
Packet pickup held the day before at Otzi Mediterranean Restaurant, 20A Liberty Rd, Eldersburg, MD — also car-dependent.
No organizer-run shuttle found.
No dedicated transit card system;
Piney Run Park in Sykesville, MD (rural Carroll County) is not served by public transit —
even the Baltimore-area MTA Maryland network (CharmCard/mobile ticketing) doesn't extend this far.
Car access is required, with parking at the park.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
It is helpful to use the central aid station, where you return after every lap, as your race reference point.
The aid station, stocked with food and drinks, is located where the loop sections change, and you also pass a place to collect water midway through course.
On your first lap, familiarise yourself with where to take water and which direction to use when entering the central aid station;
after that, it will be easier to decide in advance when you need to stop.
The 50 km and 25 km races require you to complete all the designated laps.
The timed challenge is recorded by the number of laps completed, so do not end your race simply because another participant has finished.
Each time you return to the central aid station, check how many laps remain and review the official guidance on the cut-off for starting the final lap.
The finish cut-off and the point at which you may begin another lap are not based on the same criteria.
The park address is on Mats Road in Sykesville, while Packet Pickup is listed at a separate location in Eldersburg.
Plan both the route from your accommodation to the bib pickup location and the route to the park.
There is no race-day registration.
The event goes ahead in wet weather, so pack a change of clothes in a waterproof bag.
If the forest and meadow surfaces are wet, assess the conditions on your first lap before setting your pace.
Times are local to Sykesville. Check the latest official information before the race.
