THE DREAM
This unusual Pennsylvania race pits people and horses against each other on the same start line.
Runners and equestrian competitors complete the same course in Hillman State Park over 50K or 50 miles, with their times compared.
The equestrian division is AERC-sanctioned — a race that takes on the age-old question of “man versus horse.”

So on race morning, you can just run.
No public transit; the venue is a private airport/farm property reachable only by car, about 30-40 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh
No subway, rail, bus, or local transit card applies here - it is a car-only rural venue.
Most runners fly into Pittsburgh International Airport and rent a car or book a rideshare for the drive out;
on-site camping is available for those who want to skip the commute entirely.

Steel City Human vs Horse is a unique-format event held in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania,
where runners and equestrian participants start together from the same start line and compete to complete the same course in the fastest time.
The equestrian division is sanctioned by the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC),
and non-members entering the 50K or 50-mile equestrian division must purchase a separate one-day AERC membership.
The course combines singletrack, gravel roads, and open meadows.
The main attraction is the remarkable sight of people and horses running side by side.
For runners, preparation is much the same as for a standard trail ultra — trail shoes and a fueling plan are essential —
but because parts of the course are shared with equestrian participants, it is important for safety to understand the event procedures provided in advance.
Times are local to Burgettstown. Check the latest official information before the race.
