“After yesterday's effort, I wasn't sure I could run well again today, but I decided to give it my best.”

At the 2026 Tallinn Maijooks weekend, the runner raced the individual 7km event, then joined the half marathon relay the next day. Heat and extra climbing slowed the first day's run compared with the previous year, but cooler weather helped them cover the 7.4km relay leg 20 seconds per 1km faster than the day before.

Mõtlesin küll, et kuidas ma peale eelmise päeva pingutust nüüd sama hästi peaksin jaksama joosta, aga otsustasin lihtsalt anda endast parima.

“During Maijooks, my vision blurred at times and I felt nauseous.”

At the 2019 Tallinn Maijooks 7km, strong sun and heat made the runner nauseous and forced brief walking breaks. Despite congestion in the starting corral, they finished in 38 minutes, 29 seconds, improving on the previous year by 2 minutes and setting a personal best.

The race starts and finishes at Tallinn Song Festival Grounds.

Overlooking the Baltic Sea, this iconic venue hosts Estonia's Song Festival.

Course leaves the grounds and passes through the Maarjamäe area and along the coastal limestone cliffs.

It then climbs the Lasnamäe plateau before passing through the Mäe gate at the top of the hill and descending back to the grounds.

For safety, the downhill section is designed as a zigzag, and finish is set up in front of the stage.

The main event is the 7km race, held since 1993, in which participants can choose to run or walk.

Since 2021, a 3km Girls' Run has also been held, and more recently the programme has added a women-only half marathon and the three-person relay half marathon.

Typical race-season temperature: around 10°C (49°F)

Tallinn in May averages around 10°C, with chilly mornings and evenings.

Daytime highs reach roughly 15°C, but the sea breeze near the Song Festival Grounds can make it feel colder.

Monthly rainfall is relatively low at about 40mm, although you should still carry a layer for showers.

Baltic cities have long daylight hours at this time of year, with sunlight lasting into the evening.

The course gains elevation on the climb to the Lasnamäe plateau, followed by a gradual, zigzagging descent after the summit.

The Song Festival Grounds, used for both the start and finish, are accessible from Tallinn's old town by public transport.
