“There was gobs of it on the Cuyahoga Valley National Park trails, but also rocks, roots, steep hills, creek crossings, and hairpin turns.”

Dan Horvath took part in a 2023 half marathon, running a trail with continuous mud, rocks, roots, steep climbs, and stream crossings. He cut the course short and dropped out at around mile 10.5.

“First, I was overwhelmed and still could not believe that I just ran 53 miles...53 miles in the woods and cold rain.”

SC completed 53 miles in the rain and mud at the 2017 Run with Scissors Double Marathon. Their body began to struggle from the second loop onward, but they reached the finish at Ledges Shelter before sunset and called it their favorite trail race.

Depending on the event, you will complete 1, 2, or 4 laps of the approximately 21km (13.1 mile) loop. It’s a trail that passes through rocks, roots, and fields.

On 25 October 2026, all course start at Ledge Lake Lodge in Hinckley and return to the same location.

The course is approximately 13.1 miles course, repeated 1, 2 or 4 times depending on the distance you choose.

Half marathon is 1 loop, the marathon is 2 loops and the double marathon is 4 loops.

Course passes through the centre of the Hinckley Reservation in Cleveland Metroparks and is a moderate-difficulty trail course combining rocks,

tree roots and open fields.

Each loop includes climbs and descents, so preparation differs from that for a flat road marathon.

Half marathon and the marathon can be completed by 9:00 pm, while the 52-mile event starts at 5:00 am and has a 16-hour time limit.

The marathon starts at 7:00 am, and half marathon starts at 9:00 am;

early starts are not available.

READY TO RUN

Because the start time differs by event, base your accommodation choice on the time needed to reach Ledge Lake Lodge.

The double marathon starts at 5:00 am, the marathon at 7:00 am and half marathon at 9:00 am.

Early starts are not permitted, so you must arrive in time for your scheduled start.

As the loop course passes over rocks and roots and through open fields, trail shoes and clothing that protects your feet should take priority over road shoes.

Each loop is approximately 13.1 miles, so divide your supplies and pace according to the number of repetitions.

Use the 9:00 pm finish limit for the marathon and half marathon and the 16-hour limit for the double marathon when choosing your event.
