5 of the World's Most Popular Races—Gone 10 Minutes After Registration Opens
From the Marathon du Médoc, where 8,500 bibs vanished in 9 minutes, to Cardiff and Copenhagen, which gave up on sellouts and switched to random draws: when and how the five races open their doors for 2027.
Nine minutes. That's how long it took the Marathon du Médoc, held every September in Pauillac, north of Bordeaux, France, to fill all 8,500 spots for its 40th edition in 2026.
The race's president told The Wall Street Journal that the waiting list had swelled to three times the size of the field. If “sold out 10 minutes after opening” sounds like hype, at this race it's closer to a rounded-off number.
Not all five races go that fast, of course. In the most recent registration windows, Médoc was the only one to sell out inside 10 minutes.
Group entries for Marseille-Cassis went in 4 minutes in 2019; Grandma's half took 58 minutes, Cardiff's early-bird entries 40 minutes, and the Copenhagen Half Marathon 2 hours, 30 minutes. Only Médoc and Grandma's are full marathons—the rest are half marathons and a 20K.
Still, the trend points one way. When the U.
S. running blog Running With Rock counted 23 major marathons held from January through June 2026, 19 had sold out.
Races have landed on one of two answers. Keep the field size and give spots to whoever clicks first, or drop first come, first served and switch to a lottery.
Médoc, Marseille-Cassis, and Grandma's are still on the first path; Cardiff and Copenhagen have moved to the second. So what should you do for 2027?
Start by figuring out which path your dream race is on.
Pauillac, France
1Marathon du Médoc: The Wine Festival That Filled 8,500 Spots in 9 Minutes

The Marathon du Médoc starts on the Pauillac waterfront, on the Gironde estuary. After the 9:30 a.m.
start, runners pass through the vineyards of Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe and roughly 50 châteaux before looping back to Pauillac. Along the way are about 20 wine-tasting stops, with oysters at 38K and steak at 39K. For the 2026 race, organizers put the day's supply at 18,000 oysters, 200 kilograms of ribeye steak, and about 4,500 liters of wine.
The winner gets no prize money—just their body weight in wine. So the 9-minute sellout isn't a number made by runners chasing fast times. Most entrants run in costume to match the year's theme, which for the 40th edition in 2026 was the 1980s.
In 2025, when the theme was under the sea, a runner from the YouTube channel Rae Doyle who raced that year was blunt about the start line: “If you turn up on the day without a costume, you are going to look like a loser.” There were lifeguards, coral, fish, and even a yellow submarine towed by runners dressed as the Beatles. The first race, in 1985, drew 500 runners, and 396 finished.
In 2026, the race recorded 7,849 finishers. The official website lists the 2027 race for Saturday, September 4, with registration set to open in March 2027. In 2026, a bib-only entry cost €110, and bibs could be picked up only in person, at the Pauillac sports hall the day before the race.
That's why the two runners behind the YouTube channel Team Ellis Running, who ran in 2026, booked through a tour operator: “the form is all in French. They sell out really really fast.” Go through an operator, and you won't be getting up in the middle of the night to wrestle with a French-language form.
Still, a festival has a clock. The cutoff is 6 hours, 30 minutes, and sweepers known as the “runner brooms” move along the course at that pace. Get caught, and you're dropped from the results and rankings.
This is what the Rae Doyle runner called “a little trolley of doom.” The trap comes early. With 8,500 runners starting at once, her group lined up near the back.
“We ended up taking 50 minutes to do 5 km and we're not slow,” she said. Shouldn't those 50 minutes factor into how many glasses you empty at the tasting stops?

2Marseille-Cassis: The 20K Where 7,000 Group Bibs Went in 4 Minutes

At 10 a.m. on March 12, 2019, as many as 500 people were on the Marseille-Cassis registration page at once.
That day's release was 7,000 group bibs for companies, clubs, and associations, and 120 groups from 30 French departments split them up in 4 minutes. Individual entries didn't last much longer. For the 46th edition in 2025, every individual spot sold in under an hour, and group registration closed after 15 minutes.
First run in 1979 with 700 runners, the race starts on Boulevard Michelet outside Marseille's Vélodrome stadium and covers 20 kilometers to Avenue des Albizzi on the Cassis waterfront. Its character comes from the Col de la Gineste, where the 10K aid station sits. The climb runs about 5 kilometers to the 327-meter pass, with roughly 330 meters each of total ascent and descent.
The route crosses the hills of Calanques National Park, and from the top of the pass you can look back over Marseille and the sea. The 47th edition starts at 9 a.m.
on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Individual registration opened at 10 a.m.
on March 12, with standard entry at €75. The only ways in now are the official bib resale and waiting list, running since June 16, and Marseille-Cassis Solidaire, the charity entry that requires raising at least €200. But the race's real barrier isn't the registration page—it's the pass.
Fail to clear the Col de la Gineste within 1 hour, 30 minutes of the start, and your race ends there. A runner from the YouTube channel RUN'IX, who said he finished around 11th in 2025, described his first time up the pass as “long, steep, and hard.” Parts of the climb came with a headwind, and the descent, he said, was “really steep” too.
Look only at the 20K figure and burn your legs on the climb, and the last few kilometers by the sea will feel like the longest.

3Grandma's Marathon: The 2027 Half Filled in 58 Minutes, the Marathon in 174

At 7 p.m. Central Time on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, opened registration for 2027.
More than 11,000 people waited in the virtual queue for the half alone, and all 7,500 spots in the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon were gone in 58 minutes—a record, 17 minutes faster than the one set a year earlier. The marathon's 8,000 spots took 174 minutes. For the 2026 race, those same spots took nearly 12 hours; for 2025, about a month.
The marathon's marketing and public relations director explained it to the U.S. outlet Marathon Handbook: “Registration has shifted these past years to a conversation around weeks and months to mere minutes and hours.”
A year earlier, the runner behind the YouTube channel Ryan Latham - Chasing Boston filmed registration night, throwing a “registration party” with friends as they waited for 7 p.m. He read the on-screen warning aloud: “once registration opens do not refresh, open multiple times or close the window.”
Do any of those, and you're back at the end of the line. The Great Grandma's Challenge—a Friday-night 5K followed by the marathon or half on Saturday morning—also sold out its 500 spots per event in little more than an hour or two. Half the reason the line is so long is the course.
The point-to-point route starts on Scenic Drive south of Two Harbors, follows the shore of Lake Superior, and finishes in Duluth's Canal Park, dropping about 40 meters from roughly 226 meters (740 feet) above sea level at the start to about 186 meters at the finish. The 2027 race starts at 7:45 a.m.
on Saturday, June 19, with a 7-hour cutoff. Runners ride dedicated buses to the start. The runner behind the YouTube channel Taylor Leis, who ran the half at the 50th edition in 2026, says that early-morning bus packed with runners turned out to be part of the fun.
That doesn't mean every door to 2027 is shut. About 1,000 spots are allocated to 68 official charity partners, each with a minimum fundraising requirement of $250 to $1,000. And if you're aiming for 2028, remember one date: registration opened on the evening of October 1 in both 2025 and 2026.

4Cardiff Half Marathon Switched to a Ballot After Selling 5,000 Entries in 40 Minutes

When the Cardiff Half Marathon opened registration for its 2025 race on October 9, 2024, 23,000 people had already signed up for priority access. The 5,000 early-bird entries sold out in 40 minutes, the second release didn't last an hour, and every general entry was gone within 12 hours. The chief executive of Run 4 Wales, the Welsh nonprofit that organizes the race, said, “This is the quickest all of our general entries have ever gone in Run 4 Wales' history of organising the event.”
The next year, the race stopped making runners queue. It introduced a ballot (lottery) starting with the 2026 race, and Run 4 Wales says the aim is to give everyone the same chance without the pressure of being first in line. The 2027 race is on Sunday, October 3.
Entering the ballot is free, and you pay only if you're drawn. Entries close at midnight UK time on Sunday, October 18, and results come out on Thursday, October 22. Entry costs £59 for UK residents and £70 for international applicants, who can enter in groups of three.
Only the 1,500 discounted entries for Welsh Athletics members are still first come, first served. The course is built for fast times. It starts at 10 a.
m. on Castle Street, just outside Cardiff Castle, passes Principality Stadium and Cardiff Bay, and finishes at the grandstand in the Civic Centre. A World Athletics Gold Label race, Cardiff makes up the SuperHalfs series along with Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Valencia.
It started with 1,500 runners in 2003 and now has more than 27,500 registered runners. Just don't trust the flat reputation all the way to the finish. There's an uphill ramp on the way into Cardiff Bay around 10K (6 miles), and Fairoak Road, at about 19K (12 miles) with 1.6 kilometers to go, holds the steepest hill on the course.
The runner behind the YouTube channel The Welsh Runner, who ran in 2025, put it this way: “Honestly, probably the most fun I've had in a half race. The support incredible.” Over that final 1.6 kilometers, the support is what you lean on.

5Copenhagen Half Marathon: A 2.5-Hour Sellout, Then 188,522 Lottery Entries

Entries for the 2025 Copenhagen Half Marathon were gone 2 hours, 30 minutes after registration opened, with many runners still waiting in the queue. The organizer, the nonprofit club Sparta Athletics & Running, then became the first Danish running race to adopt a lottery. Copenhagen hosted the World Athletics Road Running Championships in 2026, so the mass half marathon took a year off.
It returns on Sunday, September 19, 2027, with the field expanded to 45,000. Competition only got tougher. Organizers say 188,522 people entered the 2027 lottery, which ran from September 16 to 30, 2026—the biggest lottery in Danish running history.
With 45,000 spots, the raw math works out to about one in four. When you entered during the window made no difference to your odds. Acceptance notices go out in stages starting October 5, and successful applicants must pay 795 Danish kroner plus a 5 percent administration fee within 48 hours to lock in their spot.
What draws runners here is speed. Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya set what was then the half marathon world record on this course in 2019, running 58:01. The race starts at 9:30 a.
m. on Jagtvej, loops through Østerbro, the Old Town, Frederiksberg, and Nørrebro, and finishes in Fælledparken, stringing together gentle bends and long straightaways. It passes Rosenborg Castle and Tivoli, and late in the race it crosses Dronning Louises Bro between the lakes.
The cutoff is 3 hours. As the runner from the Light it Up channel, who ran in 2025, put it: “Even though there was 32,000 runners on course, it was never too busy.” Just don't be in a hurry to start.
That same year, the runner from the Sille Tholund channel was in the final start group, scheduled for 10:15 a.m., but didn't cross the start line until 11:02 a.
m. That's 47 minutes of waiting in the rain. The 2027 entry window has already closed.
If you're waiting on an acceptance email, don't forget this much: the 48-hour clock starts the moment it arrives. Leave your inbox unopened for two days on a weekend away, and the luck of the draw won't do you any good.

Editor's pick
Of the five, Cardiff is the only race with an entry window open right now. Entering its ballot is free until midnight on October 18, so there's nothing to lose if your name isn't drawn. It's also the first race to look at if you're chasing a PR.
A World Athletics Gold Label race and part of the SuperHalfs series, it asks you to brace for just one hill, at 19K. If wine and costumes are the point, there's really no substitute for Médoc. Wait for the registration announcement in March 2027, save your payment details ahead of time, and be in front of the screen the moment it opens.
When a race sells out in 9 minutes, spots can disappear while you're still typing your card number. General entries for Grandma's 2027 are already gone, so the realistic route is a charity that still has spots. The October 25 Marseille-Cassis is now open only through resale and charity entry, and if recent years are any guide, the next registration will open the following spring.
It opened on February 24 in 2025 and March 12 in 2026. Copenhagen is now down to luck. Once applications outnumber spots, first come, first served doesn't hold up for long.
Cardiff and Copenhagen switched to random draws a year apart, and Grandma's sellout time shrank from a month to 12 hours, then to 174 minutes. How much longer can the other three keep it a clicking race?
The Cardiff ballot deadline on October 18, the 48 hours after Copenhagen's acceptance email lands, and Médoc registration in March 2027: those are the three dates to put on your calendar first.
