THE DREAM
Around 9,000 runners take part in Tokyo's largest half marathon.
The half marathon and 10 km divisions are officially certified races, and prize money is awarded to the top finishers in half marathon.
The flat riverside course makes it a good race for targeting a personal best at the start of the new year.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“I didn't expect such a good time, so I surprised myself.”
The runner started the 2026 Tokyo New Year half marathon aiming to finish within 80 minutes, but better-than-expected form let them maintain a steady pace within a group. They held on over the midrace hill and pushed late to finish in a surprising 1 hour, 16 minutes, 35 seconds.

Toro entered the Tokyo New Year half marathon short on training and with a slightly sore knee, yet found the early miles easier than expected. Heavy legs slowed their pace from around 15km, but they kept running to a net finish of 1 hour, 42 minutes and recognized the need for longer training runs.

The start is at the Shin-Arakawa Ohashi baseball field on the Arakawa riverbank.
Half marathon starts in 5 waves at 10-minute intervals from 9:30 am, following the Arakawa past Toda Bridge,
Sasame Bridge and Kotama Bridge before turning around near the 10 km point.
Course has little elevation change, making it suitable for maintaining pace, but because it is a riverbank course,
consistent pace management from the beginning is important if you are aiming for a fast time.
Half marathon has 1,200 runners per wave, for a total of 6,000, while the 10 km event is limited to 1,500 runners and the 2 km parent-child run to 200 teams.
The half marathon turnaround point cut-off is 11:25 am, and the final cut-off is 12:40 pm.
The 10 km event starts at 1:00 pm.
If you want an official Japan Association of Athletics Federations result, enter your federation registration details when applying.
Finishers of half marathon receive a towel and finisher medal, while finishers of the 10 km and 2 km parent-child run receive a towel.

So on race morning, you can just run.
Details on registration and athlete bibs could not be confirmed in the publicly available information.

The first 200 entrants receive a heated waiting room, dedicated changing rooms,
toilets and a baggage storage area, as well as food and drinks and a stretching area.
General participants should go to the venue, the Shin-Arakawa Ohashi baseball field, and prepare to keep valuables out of baggage storage.
