THE DREAM
The Osaka International Women's Marathon is a women-only race organized by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations and held in Osaka each January.
It starts and finishes at Yanmar Stadium Nagai, formerly Nagai Stadium,
and the course passes through major parts of the city, including Osaka Castle Park and Midosuji Avenue.
It is designated as a women’s G1 event in the Marathon Grand Championship (MGC) Series, Japan’s Olympic marathon selection series.
In addition to invited athletes, general runners with an officially recognised qualifying time may enter.
The 46th edition is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2027.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“Running the Osaka International Women's Marathon had been a long-held goal in itself, and I wanted to enjoy the race and finish without being caught by time limit.”
I finished my first international race in 2026 in 2 hours 58 minutes 41 seconds. Even in strong winds and flurries, the support from my fellow runners and local residents gave me a boost, and I ran more comfortably than expected.

The runner entered the full Osaka International Ladies Marathon course for the first time on January 25, 2026. They missed their personal hydration bottles several times and had only one gel with them. After 30 km, their body cooled down and their legs stopped moving properly, so they struggled and eventually climbed into a rescue vehicle about 5 km before the finish to withdraw. The runner reflected on their fueling and preparation and resolved to try again next time.

The runner recorded a time of 3 hours 6 minutes 6 seconds at the 2026 Osaka International Ladies Marathon. They followed a friend in the cold and strong wind, then ran the final 5 km side by side with their friend. It was not their personal best, but encouraging each other and passing through the finish line made them feel the power of supporting one another.

In their first international race, the runner used the pack to maintain their pace despite the strong wind and snow, finishing in 2 hours 58 minutes 41 seconds. Taking part had been a long-standing goal, so the runner was delighted.

The runner returned to racing after 6 years and experienced an overly fast start and pain after 34km in strong winds. The runner held on with water and gels and finished the race, and was happy to have set a personal best in an official race for the first time in a long while.

The runner finished the Osaka International Ladies Marathon full course on January 25, 2026, in 2:48:05 and set a personal best. They benefited from running in a pack in the strong wind and picked up their personal hydration bottles at every point except 15 km. Although they dealt with toenail pain and a late pace decline, they broke the 2:50 barrier for the first time.

The runner wrote that at the 2025 Osaka International Women's Marathon, they ran while forming their own group in the wind. The runner ran the second half faster than the first, but fell short of their two-hour-40-minute goal, finishing in 2:40:42.

Taking the headwind into account, the runner chose the second pacemaker group. The encouragement from the pacemaker gave them a boost on the mid-course climb, but they couldn't pick up the pace as planned when running alone after 26 km, so they finished sixth and were disappointed with the result.

The Osaka International Women's Marathon holds its 46th edition on January 31, 2027.
Both the start and the finish are at Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Nagai Park.
After 2 1/5 laps of the track, runners head onto the road, pass Showacho and Imagawa, go north along Imazatosuji,
pass Oikebashi and Katsuyama, then Morinomiya, Osaka Business Park (OBP) and Tosabori-dori, and circle Osaka Castle Park.
The route then passes Morinomiya and Tamatsukuri, runs west along Nagahori-dori, turns onto Midosuji at Shinbashi and heads north to Yodoyabashi.
The halfway point is on Nagahori-dori.
From Yodoyabashi it turns back east along Tosabori-dori, passes Osaka Castle Park once more,
and retraces Katsuyama, Oikebashi, Imagawa and Showacho back to the stadium, making it an out-and-back course.
The first race was held on January 24, 1982, and in 1995 it was cancelled because of the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
A course change in 2011 that removed hilly sections around Osaka Castle made it a course suited to fast times.
The finish stadium was the main stadium of the 2007 World Athletics Championships, and the race record is 2:18:51.
The 2027 race is a women's G1 race in the MGC Series 2026-27.

ICOCA
Vending machines/ticket offices at JR West stations (e.g. Kansai Airport, Osaka Station) and Osaka Metro stations
Works directly at the gates Alternative: Osaka Amazing Pass ¥3,800 for 1-day / ¥5,400 for 2-day (official price, some resellers list slightly lower) — Worth it only if you're combining lots of subway/bus rides with visiting several of the 40+ included paid attractions in a single day (e.g.
Osaka Castle) — for pure transit-only trips, ICOCA or contactless tap is cheaper. Osaka Metro's contactless bank-card tap works on the subway, New Tram, and (since Nov 1, 2025) Osaka City Bus and Imazato Liner — but note the contactless reader is a separate panel from the IC-card panel at the gate, so look for the right symbol.
ICOCA is issued by JR West and now also works nationwide on trains, buses, and convenience stores. A new dedicated 'Japan Visitor IC Card' for short-term tourists was also rolling out in 2026.

This is not a race for recreational runners but an elite race open only to women registered with the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF).
For the 2026 race,
athletes had to be at least 19 years old on race day and hold one of the following times from a certified race: marathon 3:07, 30 km 2:08, half marathon 1:25 or 10 km 36 minutes,
and entries were accepted only through the JAAF entry system.
Athletes with a marathon time under 2:45 are classified as semi-invited.
There are four cutoff points on the course: at 5 km (Showacho), 20.0 km (north of the Tamatsukuri intersection), 30.0 km (south of the Morinomiya intersection) and 38.0 km (west of the Kita-Tanabe intersection).
Athletes who fall far behind may be stopped even between cutoff points.
The 2026 race started at 12:15 PM,
and athletes had to attend the first roll call in person and collect their bibs at Hotel New Otani Osaka the day before, from 3 PM to 6 PM.
Roll call by proxy is not allowed.
While the athletes are running, the crossing areas on the Nagai Park circuit cannot be used, so it is a good idea to decide on your spectating spot in advance.
Times are local to Osaka. Check the latest official information before the race.
