Which French Marathon for a Fast Time? The Paris Marathon, and Here Is Why

Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Médoc and Nice. Five French starts with different distances, different cut-off point and different ways of letting runners in.

The Paris Marathon is the name everyone knows. Marathon des Châteaux du Médoc is the one talked about most outside the running world, and the only one where the aid station serves wine.

Between them are Run In Lyon, Marathon de Bordeaux Métropole and Nice Côte d’Azur by UTMB. Fame says little about the race itself.

These five have different distances, different cut-off point and different ways of letting runners in.

1Paris: 169 euros, a lottery and a 2027 course still under wraps

ASICS Paris Marathon

The group’s biggest figure also belongs to its oldest race. The modern event dates to 1976; its predecessor, the 1896 Tour de Paris, drew 191 runners over roughly 40km. In 2024, 53,899 runners crossed the finish line—the world record for the largest marathon at the time, held for six months before Berlin surpassed it with 54,154 finishers.

The 50th edition is set for Sunday, April 4, 2027. For 2027, the nature of entry is changing. The first applicant will no longer get ahead of the field: lottery applications run from 14:00 on September 8, 2026, to 23:59 on September 30, with no payment required; the draw takes place on October 1, and selected runners have 72 hours to pay the flat 169-euro fee, reduced by 5% for holders of an FFA license.

Outside the lottery, the committed bib requires an 85-euro fee and at least 420 euros in donations for a partner organization. World Athletics Gold Label status, an AIMS-certified course, and no time requirement. The 2026 course started on the Champs-Élysées, descended toward Place de la Concorde, turned onto Rue de Rivoli, passed the Louvre, looped around Place de la Bastille and continued along Boulevard Soult to Bois de Vincennes.

The route then reached the Seine, Île de la Cité and the tunnels beneath Pont Neuf, followed by a large aid station at Trocadéro facing the Eiffel Tower, Bois de Boulogne and the final 200m on Avenue Foch. With new organizer Cadence Running United taking over, the 2027 course will be revealed in early 2027. For Paris, the date to remember is no longer the moment when the first click lands.

It is September 30, 2026—and then the inbox.

Lyon, France

2Lyon — 5 h 30 cut-off and cup-free aid stations

Run In Lyon by Harmonie Mutuelle

October 4, 2026. The start is at 8:30 a.m.

from Place Bellecour, with the finish in the same location. The course leaves Lyon via Caluire-et-Cuire and Collonges-au-Mont-d'Or. The official page posts the course maps for each event and downloadable files, but no elevation profiles.

The cut-off point: 5:30 for the marathon, 3 hours for the half marathon, 1:30 for the 10 km and 1:15 for the 5 km Run Solidaire, with a broom wagon behind. The marathon is timed at five points—start, 10 km, 21.1 km, 30 km and finish. The half marathon has three timing points, as does the 10 km.

The detail that changes the race: no cups or bottles are provided at the course. Runners must carry a reusable cup, soft flask or hydration vest; volunteers refill them. There are eight aid station on the marathon, three on the half marathon and one on the 10 km, spaced roughly every 5 km and stocked with crackers, bananas, dried apricots, madeleines and gingerbread.

FFA Silver Label, course AIMS-certified. Registration opened on October 15, 2025. At the time of checking, the 10 km and half marathon were sold out; only the marathon and the bib charity entries—with a minimum fundraising requirement of €200—remained available.

Registration is final and nonrefundable, except with Pass Event insurance purchased in advance. The bib is collected at the Village on Place Bellecour, Friday, October 2, from 10 a.m.

to 7 p.m., and Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.

m. to 6 p.m.

Identification and the QR code are required; the latter is sent about one week beforehand. Nothing is handed out on race day. The marathon costs between €69 and €84, depending on the registration date.

The Run Solidaire costs €18, including €4 donated to AFG Autisme.

Bordeaux, France

3Bordeaux: a €70 marathon along the Garonne

Marathon de Bordeaux Metropole

Here, the city comes first; the race follows. The date, November 8, 2026, is confirmed, with an 8 a.m.

start. Three distances, three prices: 10 km for €20, half marathon for €40 and the marathon for €70. The marathon's cut-off point is 5:30.

The course follows the Garonne from Place de la Bourse, crosses the Jacques-Chaban-Delmas Bridge to the right bank, returns via the Pont de Pierre, passes through Talence, Mérignac and Pessac among the Haut-Brion and Pape Clément vineyards, then heads back through Place Gambetta, Pey-Berland, the Palais Gallien, Porte Cailhau, the Grosse Cloche and the Grand-Théâtre before finishing near the Miroir d'eau. The start area is at Place des Quinconces. What is missing is information, too.

The organizers have published neither a finish address nor a parking and traffic page, with the course for 2026 still awaiting official measurement in the summer. No shuttle has been announced. Bags are dropped at the start village, the gear check closes 15 minutes before the start, and the organizers recommend arriving at least one hour early.

Registration is handled exclusively through TIMETO, in two waves: FFA-licensed runners from 10 a.m. on May 25 until noon on May 26; the general public from 2 p.

m. on May 26; followed by a second sales phase on July 1, 2026. The limited quota sold out in two hours, with a small additional allotment released afterward.

Bib is collected at Hangar 14, 115 quai des Chartrons, on Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.

m. World Athletics Label; course is not AIMS-certified.

Pauillac, France

4Médoc: 23 wine-and-oyster stations, 6 h 30 cut-off

Marathon du Médoc

This is the race most widely discussed outside the running world, and the only one in the group where the aid station serves wine. September 5, 2026. Start at 9 h 30 on the quays of Pauillac, finish in the same place, and 42 km through the Médoc châteaux.

The course has 23 stands serving wine, oysters and steak. Costumes are mandatory, and 2026 marks the race's 40th anniversary, with an 1980s theme. Entry costs 110 €.

Pauillac has no urban transit network, and bus service is limited. The Pauillac railway station, on the TER line from Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, is next to the start area. The organizers run buses from Bordeaux on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of race weekend.

Otherwise, a car is the practical option. The bib is collected at the COSEC in Pauillac on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 10 h to 23 h—this window only, in person, with no race-day pickup. The race fills quickly, and an agency package is often the most reliable route in.

That is the going rate for a race nobody searches for by name and everybody recognizes by its costumes. The cut-off point is 6 h 30, putting the cutoff at 16 h, and the road reopens on the same schedule. The cutoff is not merely theoretical: a team of “runners brooms” maintains that exact pace.

Crossing the line behind them means finishing outside the rankings; being dropped on the course means stopping.

Nice, France

5Nice: 165 km with 8,900 m of elevation gain—not a marathon

Nice Côte d'Azur by UTMB®

The fifth event is not a marathon, which is precisely why it belongs here: in France, the question “which marathon?” often ends with an answer that is not a marathon at all. The race is on September 25, 2026, with a 1 p.

m. start. Four formats, four starting lines and one finish: the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

The 165 km course from Auron has 8,900 m of elevation gain; the 109 km course from Roubion has 5,400 m; the 50 km course from Col d'Èze has 2,200 m; and the 23 km course from Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat has 700 m. Prices range from €55 for the 20K to €265 for the 100 miles, with a second pricing tier of €70 and €299. None of these starts is in Nice.

The MyUTMB shuttle, free but requiring a reservation, is the designated way to reach them, and a shuttle brings companions back from Auron at around 2 p.m. Bib and drop bags are collected together at the Ultra-Trail Village on the Promenade des Anglais, then transported to the designated points; the 2026 village schedule has yet to be confirmed.

On the ridgelines, a waterproof, breathable jacket is listed among the recommended gear.

Editor's pick

For the clock, Paris. It is the only one of the five with both a World Athletics Gold Label and an AIMS-certified course, with no time requirement at registration: measurement and access in the same package. The price fits in three lines—169 euros at a flat rate, a lottery whose applications close on September 30, 2026, and 72 hours to pay if the draw goes in a runner’s favor.

If Paris closes its doors, Lyon is the rational fallback, not a consolation prize: Silver Label status, an AIMS-certified course, five timing points along the marathon, including one at the 30th kilometer, a 5 h 30 cut-off and an 8 h 30 start. Bring a flask; otherwise, runners will go from one aid station to the next with nothing to drink in between. Bordeaux—not for a record: the 2026 course still had to be officially measured, and the race is not AIMS-certified.

A time can be posted there, but it is not etched in stone. As for Médoc and Nice, these are not slow races; they are races in which the clock is not the unit of measure. Twenty-three tasting stands and sweepers at 6 h 30 on one side; 8,900m of elevation gain and a 13:00 start on the other.

Judging them by time means using the wrong instrument.

Who should go where? A first marathon with room to spare: Médoc and its 6 h 30 limit, provided runners accept the costume requirement and arrive in Pauillac on Friday.

A race against the clock: Paris, then Lyon. A city to explore on foot: Bordeaux, whose course passes Haut-Brion and Pape Clément before returning to the Miroir d’eau, for 70 euros.

Mountains above the sea: Nice, with four distances from 23 to 165km. For Paris, the 2027 fee is known—169 euros—but neither the start time nor the course has been announced.

Bordeaux has published neither a finish address nor a traffic-information page. Nice’s 2026 expo hours remain to be confirmed.
