About 第52回札幌マラソン — what makes it special

ABOUT THE RACE

A day you'll remember,
long past the finish line.

A fixture beloved by Sapporo residents for more than half a century, the race reaches its 51st edition on October 4, 2026.

The programme includes half marathon (Japan Association of Athletics Federations-certified course),

a 10km (certified course), 5km wheelchair and open races, 3km, 2km and 1km events.

There is no full marathon event.

As a partner event in the Tokyo Marathon 2027 RUN as ONE programme,

three half marathon finishers will be selected by lottery to receive Tokyo Marathon 2027 entries.

The road to your own record

When the city cheers

Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.

Race reports: 3
ライチRan in 2025
“In the end, I didn’t really start running properly until more than 5 minutes after the start.”

A first-time Sapporo half marathon participant documented using a personal cup and water bottle at aid stations, a pace matched to the early cut-off point, and the difficulties in the second half.

えびGRan in 2025 · Finish time 2:54:53 (MapMyRun)
“My MapMyRun reading was 2:54:53, which was about right.”

At 63, the runner resumed running after eight years and took part in the Sapporo half marathon. The runner made it past the 10 km checkpoint, but things got tough from the Toyohira River cycling path onward, so they alternated between walking and running after 18 km before finishing.

yu_runkiRan in 2016 · Finish time 1:23:43
“My heart rate rose to 170, making it difficult to maintain my pace.”

The heat and headwind in the latter stages made the runner's time slower than the previous year. The runner persevered along the riverside and on the final climb to maintain the runner's pace, and no one overtook the runner after 12 km.

The event hub and finish are at Makomanai Sekisui Heim Stadium in Makomanai Park, Minami Ward, Sapporo.

The half marathon is a JAAF-certified course that starts on Gorin-dori,

heads via National Route 453, Nakanoshima-dori, Horohira Bridge, the left-bank road, Kikusui-Asahiyama Koen-dori,

Ekimae-dori, Minami-Odori, Odori Nishi 9- and 10-chome,

and Kita-Odori through Sapporo's downtown Odori district, then returns to the stadium along the Toyohira River.

The 10 km runs from Gorin-dori via National Route 453, Fukuzumi-Kuwazono-dori, the right-bank road,

and the Toyohira riverbank, while the 5, 3, 2, and 1 km races are loop course layouts on the park paths inside Makomanai Park.

On the half marathon, the cut-off point (time limit) checkpoints are at 5 km (40 minutes), 8 km (64 minutes), and 10 km (80 minutes).

The 10 km starts at 9 a.m., and the half marathon goes off in two waves: blocks A–D at 9:20 a.m. and blocks E–G at 9:30 a.m. If you miss your lineup window,

you start at the back of that wave;

miss the 9:30 a.m. gun and you can't run.

Half marathon cut-off point times are based on the second-wave start (9:30 a.m.).

On the half marathon, around 8.5 km (Minami-Odori), around 9.5 km (Kita-Odori),

and at 11 km (in front of the Sapporo Park Hotel), marshals may redirect runners to let pedestrians cross.

This year's race introduces pacer groups for the first time, targeting 1:30 and 1:40 (block B);

1:45, 1:50, and 2:00 (block C);

2:00 (block E); and 2:15 and 2:30 (block F).
