The road to your own record

The city you want to run becomes your next trip.

THE DREAM
The 56km ultramarathon in Cape Town, South Africa, is known as the “world’s most beautiful marathon.” It takes place on 4 April 2027 (Sun),
and the 21.1km half marathon is held at the same start line the day before, on 3 April (Sat).
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“I do try and run all year round. A lot of people stop after Oceans or Comrades and then start again in January.”This is the story of a runner who completed their 40th Two Oceans Ultra in 2025. In 1995, they set a personal best in 3 hours 56 minutes 54 seconds and received the Silver Medal six times. They said that, in their faster days, once they were comfortable running at 3 minutes 45 seconds per kilometre, running 56km at 4 minutes 15 seconds per kilometre was quite manageable. They attributed their ability to keep going for 40 years to running throughout the year, while many people take a break after the Oceans or Comrades and start again in January.
“The 2025 Totalsports 56km Two Oceans Ultra Marathon was to date the greatest achievement in my running career as of the present.”The runner felt pain in their legs at Chapman's Peak, the 33 km point, and after reaching marathon distance they also walked and stretched. However, they picked up the pace again for the final 11 km and finished in 4 hours, 59 minutes and 11 seconds. The runner considers the support and finishing experience at this race their greatest running achievement.
“Two Oceans, you were hard, but rewarding. You reminded me in training and racing the feeling of running for pure joy.”Stephanie Humphrey prepared for the 56K climbing course by focusing on distance and elevation rather than speed work. She said starting in the dark, climbing Chapman's Peak and Constantia Nek, and finishing amid the cheers let her feel the pure joy of running.
“I cross the line in 6:26, exhausted but relieved to have another one in the bag.”Russell Mackintosh took on the Two Oceans Ultra after an injury and with limited training. He managed his pace early on, drew on support from the crowds and aid stations, walked the final climb, and finished in 6:26.
“This was probably one of the toughest road races that I’ve done.”disciplemaniac took part in a 56K ultra in 2022. They wrote that the strict 7-hour time limit and the climbs in the back half were the toughest part.
“The last 2.5 km of Constantia Nek are the toughest climb in this race.”This is a race report from a runner who finished in under 5 hours, with a time of 4 hours 55 minutes 53 seconds. The runner got up at 3:15 am, and it started raining; the rain continued throughout the journey to the start. Chapman’s Peak, which the runner had feared, turned out to have a gradual gradient and some downhill sections, so the runner wrote that this was a section where they ran through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. The real challenge was Constantia Nek, especially the final 2.5km, which was the toughest climb in this course, so the runner noted that anyone aiming for under 5 hours could not afford to lose time there.
We translated a short line from each public race report and summarized the experience. Finish times are as stated by the author, and past editions may differ from this year's weather and operations.

Runners start · local time — The 56km ultra starts in batches from 06:00, while the 21.1km half marathon held the day before starts in batches from 07:00.
Starting on Newlands Main Road, runners first follow the False Bay coast through Muizenberg, St James and Kalk Bay.
This is where the race name, referring to the divide between the Atlantic and Indian oceans, comes from.
Chapman’s Peak begins at the 28km mark.
This coastal road, carved into the cliffs, has moderate gradients, while the ocean opens out completely to the left and forms the face of the course.
The real challenge comes around 42km.
The Constantia Nek climb begins where a typical marathon would finish, and you must get over the summit to reach the UCT Rugby Field finish.
The cut-off is 7 hours from the start of the final batch, so it is not especially generous for 56km.
For the 2027 edition, the field sizes for the ultra and the half marathon will each increase to 21,000, making this the largest edition in the race’s history.
Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
The 2027 expo schedule has not yet been published.
Get a myconnect card (MyCiTi's reloadable transit card) from a station kiosk for around R40, then load it with Mover pay-as-you-go value or a multi-day pass — this is the most reliable way to ride the MyCiTi bus network as a visitor.
Newlands (near Cape Town's Southern Line)
Parking near the start on Newlands Main Road is very limited.
Organisers advise runners to use the dedicated parking at UCT and local schools, then take the free race-day shuttle or walk to the start.
UCT Upper Campus, Rondebosch
Both the ultra and the half marathon finish at the UCT Rugby Fields.
A free race-day shuttle service runs between the UCT finish venue and the designated parking areas.
A free race-day shuttle service operates between the finish venue at UCT and the various designated parking areas,
taking runners and supporters back to the parking areas after the race.
Runners are advised to arrive early to avoid congestion.

Alternative: 1-Day / 3-Day / 7-Day Pass (loaded onto a myconnect card) —
Worth it if you'll take 3+ MyCiTi rides in a day, e.g. combining airport transfer, race expo, and sightseeing trips.
MyCiTi's own site states EMV (bank card) fare payment was discontinued as of 4 December 2025 in favor of the revamped myconnect card system —
so don't rely on tapping a foreign bank card.
MyCiTi mainly serves the CBD, Atlantic seaboard, and airport route (A01);
it does not cover the whole metro, so many runners also use Uber/Bolt.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
The start is divided into batches from 6:00 am.
There is very little parking around Newlands start line,
so it is safer to park at the facilities provided at UCT and nearby schools and use the free race shuttle.
Because the finish and start line are in different locations (the UCT Rugby Field),
the shuttle also uses the same route to return you to the car parks after the race.
In the ultra, the intermediate cut-off point will be the first thing to stop you, rather than your ability to finish the distance.
In the 2026 edition, cut-off point were located at Fish Hoek at 24.5km, the start of Chapman’s Peak at 28km, the marathon point and 50km, in that order.
If you only just get through the cut-off point, it is virtually impossible to finish within 7 hours.
To enter the ultra,
you need a qualifying time: between May 2026 and March 2027, you must complete a marathon in under 5 hours or complete a longer distance with an equivalent performance.
The half marathon does not require a qualifying time, but you must submit an official 10km, 15km or 21.1km result by 28 February 2027 to be assigned a batch.
Times are local to Cape Town. Check the latest official information before the race.
