Borkum is a North Sea island reachable only by ferry (AG Ems) from Emden, about a 2-hour crossing (or ~1 hour by fast ferry/catamaran); tickets are bought online or at the port terminal with cash or card, no IC transit card applies. On the island itself, a historic narrow-gauge train and local buses connect the harbor to town, with cars restricted in some zones during summer.
Bringing a car onto the ferry costs an extra EUR70-120 depending on vehicle size, so most runners go on foot/bike/train instead.
