The road to your own record

The city you want to run becomes your next trip.

THE DREAM
This race is built around the theme of "the science of the marathon."
Organizers keep refining operations from the runner's point of view.
Picture the course in advance
and find the pace that fits you.
Streets lined with cheers, runners all around.
You'll be part of that scene.
Take it slow with the finish still in you,
and meet the city all over again.
From the joy of finishing to the tough moments — read what runners wrote themselves.
“I achieved the result safely, although only just.”
The 2025 first-time full marathon runner focused on running training instead of cycling to chase a sub-3 finish. The night before traveling to the race, they slept only about two hours because of noise at the capsule hotel, and although they struggled to hold their pace in the later stages, they narrowly reached their goal.

Read the original on note.com“At the event where I set a personal best last year, I set a new personal best again this year.”
At the runner's sixth full marathon, they ran through the University of Tsukuba campus and along roads lined with autumn leaves. The runner maintained their target pace through 20 km, but slowed down afterward when their thighs began to feel as though they might cramp. With a net time of 4:34:14, the runner set a new personal best, and the baggage check and post-race exit flow felt smooth.

Read the original on note“I managed to finish somehow. My time was 2 hours 54 minutes 56 seconds.”
Early on, the runner saved energy by following the pace group at around 4 minutes 10 seconds per kilometer. After 20 km, their hips and legs felt heavy, and they ran carefully from 35 km onward because of the risk of calf cramps, but finished in 2 hours 54 minutes 56 seconds with support from their fellow runners.

Read the original on RUN TO DIE“My time was in the 3 hours 35 minutes range, and it was a satisfying race after a long time!”
For their first participation in 2024, the participant missed their wave start while waiting for the toilet and started from a different block, so their official result was disqualified. The reference net time provided by the race office was in the 3 hours 35 minutes range, and they reported maintaining 5 minutes pace through 36 km.

Zeroshiki0930, a 2024 participant, took a shuttle bus from Kenkyu Gakuen Station to the event venue, with a starting loss of 8 seconds. After 28K their legs grew heavy and they felt nauseated over the final 10K, but they held on and came in at 2:47:57, within 2 hours 50 minutes.

In 2023, the full marathon participant ran in rainy, cold weather and struggled to maintain pace on the uphill section of the course near 35 km and in the final university campus section. They achieved a sub-3.5 for the first time in 4 years, with an official finish time of 3 hours 28 minutes 10 seconds.

Read the original on 素人ランナーのランニングブログ“The race organiser changed the course this year.”A Tsukuba participant assessed the changed course, autumn foliage, running direction, and road surface based on their own experience.
“Managing my pace well helped my legs hold up all the way to the end.”
The runner set a heart-rate cap and ran the climbs without pushing too hard. The wave start reduced the early congestion, and the runner picked up the pace in the second half to finish with a negative split.

The Tsukuba Marathon is a full marathon certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations,
starting on the outer road of the iias Tsukuba shopping mall and finishing at the main venue, Tsukuba City Hall.
On sections where outbound and returning runners share the same road, returning runners have priority.
Distance markers stand every 1 km, and from the point where 5 km remain, the remaining distance is shown.
The race began on March 1, 1981, before Tsukuba City existed, as the Tsukuba Gakuen Marathon.
The first edition was based at Doho Park with three events of 30 km, 10 km and 5 km and 3,070 participants,
and it was the first race in Japan to use an electric car as the lead vehicle.
In 1985 it was held as an opening event of the Science Expo and the 30 km became 42.195 km, and in 1988 it took its current name when the city was established.
In 2006 the one-way course was changed to an out-and-back course and the start was moved earlier from 10:30 to 9:30.
The race's theme is 'Science of the Marathon', and it has grown to more than 18,000 participants.
The 46th edition in 2026 has a full marathon field of 11,000, and only runners who can finish within 6 hours may enter.
It is also a partner race of the Tokyo Marathon.

Pick up your bib, check your wave.
So on race morning, you can just run.
Bibs are sent to all participants in advance, so there is no on-site registration.
Be sure to bring your bib, which shows your corral, and arrive by the assembly time listed in the participant guide on the official site.
Tsukuba Express Kenkyugakuen Station or TX Tsukuba Station
The main venue area is around Tsukuba City Hall and central Tsukuba. The organizer does not operate a shuttle bus from Tsukuba Station or Tsuchiura Station for 2026. From JR Tsuchiura Station, take a local bus to Tsukuba Center, transfer to the Tsukuba Express at Tsukuba Station, and travel to Kenkyugakuen Station.
There is a round-trip direct bus from Tokyo Station (announcement on 9/14). There is no parking lot for the organizer, and parking at nearby facilities or on the street is prohibited.
Please use public transportation.
Same access pattern—no dedicated shuttle; use TX Tsukuba Station or Kenkyugakuen Station and continue on foot or by local bus.
No organizer parking is provided at the main venue; paid parking near Tsukuba Station is suggested as an alternative.
Shuttle bus service from Tsukuba Station or Tsuchiura Station is confirmed not to be available for the 2026 race, as explicitly stated on the official page.
Your start time, fuel and bag drop.
Know them ahead and the run feels easier.
The full marathon starts in waves from 8:50 to 9:10 AM.
Runners who do not cross the start line within 10 minutes of the last wave's start are disqualified, so please line up in time.
The bib is mailed to all participants in advance, and there is no race-day registration desk.
If you arrive after the assembly time given in the participant guide, you will start at the very back regardless of the block printed on your bib.
The venue, Tsukuba City Hall, is a 7-minute walk from Kenkyu-gakuen Station on the Tsukuba Express.
From JR Tsuchiura Station, take a local bus bound for Tsukuba Center to Tsukuba Station,
then change to the Tsukuba Express and get off at Kenkyu-gakuen Station;
the trip takes about 40 minutes. There is no shuttle bus from Tsuchiura Station.
The race provides no parking, and paid car parks around City Hall are limited.
If you come by car, it is easier to park at a paid car park near Tsukuba Station and take the train 3 minutes to Kenkyu-gakuen Station.
Times are local to Tsukuba. Check the latest official information before the race.
