“Even then, I went into this race with very low expectations.”

Bernice Wong tackled steep climbs and rice-paddy paths in the 2022 Vietnam Jungle Marathon 12km, finishing fourth among women and 17th overall despite several falls. Just recovered from COVID, she began with low expectations but found the bamboo bridges and small streams memorable.

The Vietnam Jungle Marathon is set in the Pù Luông Nature Reserve in Mai Châu, about 160km southwest of Hanoi.

Course is divided into four events — 10km, 25km, 50km, and 70km —

passing through jungle canopy and limestone peaks and valleys, terraced rice paddies, ethnic minority villages, waterfalls, and rivers.

The route includes river crossings via bamboo bridges and stepping stones, an old water mill site,

and landmarks known as 'Sky Mountain' and 'The Spike,' along with the Co Luong Valley.

Elevation gain reaches about 2,080m for the 50km course and over 3,000m for the 70km course.

For the 25km course, the time limit for passing the Cổ Lũng checkpoint is set at 4:00 PM, and the finish time limit is 8:00 PM.

Getting to the start

No public transit reaches Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Start/finish is near Ban Don village / Lang Leo within the reserve, roughly 160-175km (about 5-5.5 hours by road) from Hanoi / Noi Bai International Airport.

No public bus network serves Pu Luong; taxi from Noi Bai Airport to the Hanoi meeting point costs roughly 400,000 VND.

Getting to the finish

Most participants stay at resorts along the main road near the start/finish as part of race travel packages.

Start shuttle

The organizer's official 3-day race package includes a bus departing Hanoi (Turtle Lake, Tay Ho district) 09:30-12:00 the Friday before; return shuttle departs Pu Luong resorts ~13:00, arriving Hanoi ~18:00. Independent commercial operators (Pu Luong Express Bus, Pu Luong Excursions) also run daily Hanoi-Pu Luong buses (~$15-20 USD).
