The Frankfurt Marathon Finishes Indoors
With just 27.8 meters of elevation change, the flat course ends on a 60-meter red carpet inside the Festhalle. Regular registration closed on October 4, but late entries remain available for โฌ166 through October 18.
On October 26, 2025, British runner MrJonesRuns hit the final stretch of the Frankfurt Marathon right on sub-3 pace. Heading back toward the start area, runners see a big sign in the distance.
In a video posted after the race, MrJonesRuns offers a warning: "Once you see a big sign in the distance, unfortunately that isn't the finish." From there, it's another half mile, maybe 1 mile, before the course enters the Messe, Frankfurt's exhibition grounds.
A last push squeezed out a little more speed, but the finish clock stopped at 3:00:03. Three seconds short.
The finish line sits well beyond that sign, under a roof. Runners enter the Festhalle at Messe Frankfurt through its east entrance, then cover another 60 meters of red carpet to an indoor finish.
The 2026 race starts at 10 a.m.
on Sunday, October 25, and just 27.8 meters separate the course's lowest and highest points. The rumors about a flat course?
They're true. But plans here tend to come apart in the wind, over the final few kilometers back in the city center, and on race morning before the startโnot on any hill.
1Arrive late to the start area and the first few kilometers are a crush

The start line is on Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage, beside the Messeturm. Wave starts begin at 10 a.m.
, and every runner must cross the line by 10:35 a.m. Corrals are assigned by the goal time entered at registration and marked by a logo on the left side of the bib.
Bag drop opens at 8 a.m. on race day on Level 1 of Hall 1 at Messe Frankfurt (Halle 1, Ebene 1), and only the official starter bag is accepted.
There's no bag drop in the start area. MrJonesRuns reached the start area only about 5 minutes before the gun. The corrals were fenced off, and it took finding a gap in the fencing to squeeze inโno warmup, no stretching.
The early pace was actually faster than planned, but around 6K the pack closed in and MrJonesRuns slowed almost to a walk. Pacing Josh, a YouTuber who followed the 3:29 pacer, also called the opening stretch "very, very crowded." The skyscrapers threw off the GPS pace, so for a while Pacing Josh simply followed the runners ahead.
October 25, 2026, is also the day daylight saving time ends in Europe, with 3 a.m. turning back to 2 a.
m. The night before the 2025 race, Pacing Josh welcomed the change: "summertime ends todayโฆ I'm gaining an hour." Phones update automatically, of course.
Don't assume the same of your watch or the hotel alarm. Set them yourself the night before.

2Only 27.8 meters of elevation change, and an average finish under 4 hours

The course's lowest point sits 89.4 meters above sea level; its highest, 117.2 meters. Across 42.195 kilometers, that's a difference of 27.8 meters, about the height of a nine-story apartment building. Wilson Kipsang set the men's course record of 2:03:42 in 2011, 4 seconds off the world record at the time.
On the strength of that mark, organizers bill Frankfurt as the third-fastest city marathon course in the world. Hawi Feysa holds the women's record, 2:17:25, set in 2024. It isn't fast only for the elites.
According to an analysis by marathon-ergebnisse.de that organizers cite, the race's average finish time is 3:57:56, the fastest among Germany's five biggest marathons. Pacers (Zuglรคufer) run to 10 goal times from 2:59 to 5:29, and they're easy to spot by the flags and shirts showing their target times.
So should you push early on a fast course? At 15K, Pacing Josh saw a split a minute ahead of plan and deliberately eased off. Past halfway came the verdictโ"Feeling really good"โand an unofficial 3:25 at the finish.
3In Frankfurt, windโnot hillsโdecides your time

Gian-Andri Baumann (YouTube), who finished a first marathon in 2:22:51 in 2025, looks back on the day this way: โthe first 25ks there was a big portion where you had headwind.โ A German comment under that yearโs official race broadcast on YouTube read: โThe headwind today was really fierce.โ Nor was it a one-off.
Leaf through the raceโs official history and itโs wind, then more wind. In 1998, the winner prevailed in gusts of 90 km/h. Strong winds and heavy rain hit in 2013, and high winds returned in 2017 and 2018.
The 2017 womenโs champion was on course-record pace before the wind sapped her speed over the closing stretch. In 2012, temperatures barely above freezing stood in the way of a record attempt. The way back is different.
After 30K, Baumann caught a tailwind on the long straight toward the city center. So build your pacing plan around the wind forecast the day before the race. Take a strong headwind alone and the advantage of a flat course disappears fast.
Thatโs why Baumann spent the first 25K tucked behind the second womenโs elite group and its pacers.
4The Main bridge descent at 27K, and Hรถchst, where the race began

After crossing the Main on the Alte Brรผcke, the course heads south through Sachsenhausen and Niederrad to Schwanheim. The bridge back over the river there is the only noticeable climb on the course. On the far side is Hรถchst, the westernmost point.
Runners circle the Bolongaropalast, pass through Nied and head back toward the city center. Hรถchst is where the race first started. On May 17, 1981, running legend Emil Zรกtopek gave the first start signal outside the east gate of the Hoechst chemical company, with 3,169 runners entered.
The course still loops through the neighborhood 45 years later before returning downtown. So where do you really need to be careful? On the bridge descent.
Around 27K, Baumann let it roll off the top of the bridge and, for the first time, felt the damage in the muscles rather than the lungs. The thought came: โitโs a bit too early for this.โ From there, the plan to make a move at 30K started to waver.
At 27K, Baumann doubted those legs for the first time.
5The big sign before the finish line is too early for a kick

Back in the city center, the course passes the Galluswarte at 34K and the Alte Oper at 36K. As Baumann puts it: โYou had to do loops.โ The crowds grow and the streets narrow.
MrJonesRuns singles out one intersection on this stretch as a spot where runners get boxed in and advises preparing for it. Right before the finish comes a sight thatโs easy to misread. Heading back toward the start area, youโll see a big sign in the distance.
As MrJonesRuns says, it isnโt the finish; another half mile to 1 mile remains before the course enters the Messe. If youโre doing the math on your final kilometer by the watch, build that distance into the plan. The last scene is indoors.
Through the east entrance of the Festhalle, a red carpet runs 60 meters, with cheerleaders lining both sides. In 2013, 7,000 spectators greeted runners inside the hall, and in 2015 the womenโs race was decided by a single step on that carpet. MrJonesRuns, who has run more than 15 marathons, puts it simply: of them all, โthis was probably the best ending.โ
6You canโt go back to the finish area, so set a meeting spot in advance

What happens after the carpet is fixed, too. Past the finish, runners move through the Forum to the Agora for medals, ponchos and postrace food and drinks, and the route is one-way. Showers and changing rooms are on the ground floor of Hall 1; massages run on Level 1 of Hall 1 from noon to 5 p.
m. Bags checked in the morning must be collected by 5 p.m.
, and the medical station in the Festhalle opens at 10 a.m. If you have to stop midrace, sweep buses waiting at 23.7K, 27.2K and 30Kโor public transportationโwill get you back to the Messe free of charge, because your bib doubles as a ticket on all RMV buses and trains that day.
Organizers designate two meeting points: Level 2 of Hall 1, or the P1 area between the Festhalle and Hall 1. MrJonesRuns was lying on the floor just past the finish when a man said it was time to get up. The postrace flow doesnโt leave much room to linger.
Settle on a meeting point before the start.
7โฌ166 through October 18, then on-site entry

Entry fees started at โฌ111 and climbed in stages in order of registration, and regular registration closed on October 4 at โฌ156. Late online registration runs October 5โ18 at โฌ166. If spots remain after that, on-site entry will be available October 23โ25 at the same price.
Online transfers of entries to another runner ended on October 4. The cutoff is 6 hours from crossing the start line, an average of 8:30 per kilometer, and the finish closes at 4:45 p.m.
Bib pickup is at the Marathonmall on Level 2 of Hall 1 at Messe Frankfurt: Friday, October 23, from noon to 7 p.m.; Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.
m. to 7 p.m.
; and race morning from 7 to 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.
m. Saturday, the 5K Brezellauf (โฌ5) runs on the plaza outside the Messe. Race-morning pickup is allowed under the rules.
But in 2025, MrJonesRuns arrived at the Messe at 8:50 a.m. on race day, 1 hour 10 minutes before the start, and lost 20 minutes to a QR-code problem.
By around 9:20, the bag-drop floor was already mobbed. That morning is why MrJonesRuns reached the corral only 5 minutes before the start.
Editor's pick
If your goal is a minute-specific barrier like sub-3 or sub-4, Frankfurt is a smart pick on the fall calendar. The case rests on 27.8 meters of elevation change, an average finish time of 3 hours 57 minutes and 10 pace groups. Two more things belong in the math: the wind direction the day before the race, and the final 1-mile stretch that remains after the big sign.
Don't start your kick the moment you see that sign. For a first marathon, there's even less to weigh. The cutoff is a generous 6 hours from crossing the start line, or 8:30 per kilometer, and the indoor finish is open to everyone, whatever the time on the clock.
That leaves two jobs: decide before late registration closes on October 18, and pick up your bib by Saturday.
Long after the big sign, a door finally appears. Frankfurt's 42.195 kilometers end behind it, indoors and under a roof.
