Women-only marathons: which one for your first full?
Here are 5 women-only races. Nagoya starts under a roof and finishes under one; Osaka runs out and back along Midosuji to Yodoyabashi. Savannah threads through the city's squares, Bratislava follows the Danube riverside, and Beijing circles the reservoir at the Ming Tombs.
On the morning of March 14, at Nagoyaโs Vantelin Dome, about 20,000 women line up beneath the roof and head into the city at 9:10. The finish is inside the same dome.
The roof is overhead at the start and when the runners return. Six weeks earlier, Osaka stages another race called the Womenโs Marathon.
The 42.195km course leaves Yanmar Stadium Nagai, passes through Osaka Castle Park, heads north along Midosuji to Yodoyabashi, then doubles back. The field is entirely different, however.
An official qualifying time is required to enter. What separates women-only races is not atmosphere.
It is course and the regulations. A course under a roof, along a river, through historic squares or around a reservoir.
And who is allowed to stand on the start line.
1Nagoya Womenโs Marathon: Dome start and finish, with tougher cut-offs in the first half

This is a race whose start line is beneath a roof. Vantelin Dome Nagoya serves as both start and finish. At 9:10, the gun sends about 20,000 runners out from beneath the same roof and into the city, and they return to that building.
Time spent lining up and time spent sitting down after the finish are both indoors. Nagoya is at the threshold of spring in mid-March, a time when temperatures can favor a fast race. Entry is open to women, and no qualifying time is required.
The 5,500-place general entry for residents of Japan runs by lottery from 20:00 on September 17 through 23:59 on September 24, with results sent by early October. The 3,500 overseas places are first come, first served through September 23. The challenge, travel-plan and charity first-come, first-served categories closed during the summer.
Entry costs 19,000 yen for the general and elite categories; 18,000 yen for the challenge, travel-plan and heart-support categories; and 23,000 yen for the charity category. Bib pickup is available only on March 12 (Friday) from 12:00 to 20:30 and March 13 (Saturday) from 10:00 to 19:30. There is no race-day pickup or proxy pickup (invited athletes collect theirs at the Nagoya Tokyu Hotel on March 13).
There is also time to account for after the finish. Finishers receive a jewelry memento, but the line can be long; post-race plans should remain open until the 16:00 hour. The World Athletics label is Platinum, the highest among these five races.
The venue is a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Nagoya Dome-mae Yada Station (Meijo Line and Yutorito Line), or 15 minutes from Ozone Station. The dayโs structure is laid out in the scheduled course closures. The 6.0km point closes at 10:30, 10.4km at 11:55, 15.7km at 12:35, 21.5km at 12:52, 26.2km at 13:37, 29.9km at 14:11, 35.0km at 14:59, 38.6km at 15:32, 41.7km at 16:05 and the 42.195km finish at 16:10.
The time limit is 7 hours. The numbers reveal the design. Only 17 minutes are allowed for the 5.8km from 15.7km to 21.5km, while the 3.7km from 26.2km to 29.9km gets 34 minutes.
Time lost in the first half cannot be recovered in the second. Any cushion has to be built early.

2Osaka International Womenโs Marathon โ an out-and-back course between Nagai and Yodoyabashi

The 46th Osaka edition takes place on January 31, 2027 (Sunday). Course is a single out-and-back. The course leaves Yanmar Stadium Nagai, passes through Showacho, Imagawa 2, Oikebashi, Katsuyama 4 and Morinomiya, enters Osaka Business Park (OBP), then runs along Tosabori-dori to Osaka Castle Park.
From Morinomiya, it continues through Tamatsukuri and along Nagahori-dori to Shinsaibashi, then heads north on Midosuji to Yodoyabashi. The route reverses from there, bringing runners back to Nagai. Because it is an out-and-back course, the course passes through Osaka Castle Park and along Midosuji twice.
The scenery seen on the way out returns when the legs have less left in them. The race uses the cityโs main streets as they are, tracing a full north-south crossing of central Osaka. The name is the same as NagoyaโsโโWomenโs Marathonโโbut the field is not.
Except for invited athletes, applicants must hold an official qualifying time and be at least 19 years old on race day and registered with the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. The previous editionโs guidelines listed standards including 3 hours 07 minutes or faster. The race is a womenโs G1 event in the Marathon Grand Championship (MGC) Series and feeds directly into national-team selection.
Its World Athletics label is Platinum. Cars and motorcycles will be barred from the venue on race day, and the organizers ask spectators and participants to use trains, subways and buses. Nagai Station on the Midosuji Line is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 or Exit 3; Tsurugaoka Station on the JR Hanwa Line is also about 5 minutes away.
For the 45th edition, traffic restrictions around the start ran from approximately 12:00 to approximately 12:40, while those around the finish ran from 14:20 to 15:30. Restrictions for the 46th edition have not been announced. The only known start-time reference is 12:15, based on the 45th edition.
The 45th-edition entry fee was 15,000 yen, including tax, plus a 615-yen administrative fee. The fee was waived for runners with a time of 2 hours 45 minutes or faster. The 46th-edition fee has not been announced.
Bibs are collected in person at the first call the day before; in the 2026 edition, that window was 15:00 to 18:00 on January 24 (Saturday) at Hotel New Otani Osaka. There is no proxy or race-day pickup. Osaka also has the general-entry Osaka Marathon and the Osaka half marathon.
Despite the similar names, they are separate races.

3Savannah Womenโs Half Marathon: a course through the Historic Districtโs squares

Savannahโs half marathon turns the historic district itself into the course. The start is at the intersection of Drayton Street and Gwinnett Street, at the edge of Forsyth Park. From there, the course threads through the cityโs squares, passes the tree-lined section around Daffin Park and returns to the fountain in Forsyth Park.
The start and finish are less than a 10-minute walk apart. The race starts at 7:15 on April 3, 2027. The minimum age for half marathon is 12, the lowest of these five races.
The events are half marathon, 5K, GOTR 5K, and virtual half marathon and 5K races. A 12-year-old running with a mother and an adult chasing a time share the same squares on the same morning. Savannah has no rail or subway system.
Local transportation consists of the free dot shuttle and CAT buses; the Forsyth Loop runs along Drayton Street and Whitaker Street between Johnson Square and Forsyth Park. The start lies on that route. Anyone staying downtown can walk to the line.
The fee schedule is the striking detail. Entry prices rise in steps according to the date. Half marathon costs 90 dollars from April 15 to 18, 2026; 100 dollars from April 19 to July 30; 120 dollars from July 31 to September 10; 130 dollars from September 11 to November 15; 150 dollars from November 16 to December 31; 160 dollars once 2027 begins; 170 dollars from February 21; and 180 dollars from the day before the race onward.
The 5K follows the same pattern, rising from 40 dollars to 80 dollars. The exception is GOTR 5K (GOTR Family), which remains 45 dollars from April 30, 2026 through race day. Here, waiting costs money.
Bib pickup is on Friday, the day before the race, at Keeho Ironworks (Trusteesโ Garden). Race-day pickup is also available near Forsyth Park, but same-day registration closes when the field is close to selling out.

4Bratislava dm Womenโs Run โ a 5km mother-daughter race

Bratislavaโs dm Womenโs Run starts and finishes along the Danube. The course leaves Pribinovo Square (Pribinovo nรกmestie), beside the Eurovea complex, and returns to the same square. The start and finish are unchanged for both the 10km and 5km.
The setting is the walkable stretch between the old town and the river. There are four distance options: 10km, 5km, a 5km mother-and-daughter race and a 5km Nordic-walking event. This is the only one of the five to offer a separate mother-and-daughter division.
The range of options lowers the barrier for beginners and families. The race takes place on September 19, 2026. The start time cannot be treated as confirmed.
The recorded time is 15:00, the event guide says 9:30, and the official page lists 9:00. The three times conflict. It is best treated as undecided, with runners checking the announcement for their specific event.
The venue is accessible by public transportation. The official โFirst dm Womenโs Runโ guide lists the Novรฉ SND, Malรก Scรฉna and ล afรกrikovo nรกmestie stops. Eurovea also offers free parking for up to 3 hours on weekdays and 5 hours on weekends.
Entry starts at 25 euros, and registration closes on September 16, 2026. Bib pickup runs from 12:00 to 19:00 on September 16 (Wednesday) through September 18 (Friday), and from 7:00 to 13:00 on September 19 (Saturday). Race-day pickup is available until 2 hours before the start of the relevant event and requires presentation of the HAKU check-in pass and registration confirmation.
The exact pickup location will be announced later along with the eventโs technical map.

5Beijing RUN GIRLS Womenโs Run: 10km around the reservoir, with the date still to be confirmed

Beijingโs RUN GIRLS Womenโs Run is a single-event womenโs 10K. Course follows a loop through the park around the venue; the recorded location places it around the Ming Tombs Reservoir in Changping District, on the outskirts of Beijing. This is not a city race run on closed roads, but a 10K that circles the water before returning to the start.
The trade-off is getting there. The nearest station, Shisanling Scenic Area Station on the Changping Line, is about 4km from the reservoir, and the final stretch requires a bus or taxi. Beijingโs public transport is built around the Yikatong card, purchased and topped up at stations, but for visitors the simplest option is to scan an Alipay or WeChat Pay transit QR code at the gates.
A single ride costs about 3 yuan and up. The entry field is the smallest of these five races. The limit is 3,000, and if applications exceed capacity, places are allocated by lottery.
Nagoya accepts about 20,000 runners on a first-come, first-served basis; this race cuts the field at 3,000 by lottery. Even among women-only races, the size of the entry pool differs by more than a factor of six. The entry fee is 120 yuan.
That much is settled, but the race date remains unconfirmed. The public notice on record lists a 09:00 Sunday start, yet the date field is blank, so the schedule itself has not been finalized. The course, distance and field size are set first; the date comes last.

Editor's pick
For a first full marathon in a women-only race, Nagoya is the choice. The race combines a start and finish under the same roof, an entry route that requires no qualifying time and a 7-hour time limit. The mid-March date also works in the runnersโ favor, with temperatures generally on their side.
The start line is a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of the station, removing one more burden from the morning. Osaka is not a race to enter casually; it is a race to target. The out-and-back from Nagai to Yodoyabashi cuts straight through the city center, but without an official time there is no way through the entry door.
The line is drawn for competitors: a 2-hour-45-minute standard, with the entry fee waived for those who meet it. Think of the course less as a race to run than as a start line to reach someday. For a first 10km or 5km, Bratislava or Beijing makes more sense.
Bratislava offers a 5km mother-and-daughter division starting and finishing along the Danube, while Beijing asks only for 120 yuan and a place in the lottery. In Savannah, the earlier the decision, the lower the fee. The difference between 90 dollars and 180 dollars is determined not by speed but by the date of entry.
The course itselfโthe route through the squares and back to the fountainโdoes not change.
โWomen-only raceโ does not describe a single atmosphere. The courses alone have little in common: beneath a dome, out and back along Midosuji, through historic squares, beside the Danube and around the reservoir at the Ming Tombs.
Nagoya combines lottery and first-come, first-served places to draw about 20,000 runners; Osaka limits the field through official qualifying times. Savannah accepts runners from age 12, while Beijing selects 3,000 by lottery.
The same wordโwomenโcan describe completely opposite approaches to field size. None of the five racesโ official information, within the details checked, specifies the changing-room or toilet flow.
What is clear is the location and timing of packet pickup, along with whether the start is beneath a roof, in a park or beside a river. Everything beyond that will have to be assessed on race morning.
