Nagoya Women's Marathon: Can a First-Timer Finish Inside 7 Hours?
March 14, 2027: a 7-hour limit and nine intermediate cutoffs. We read the cutoff table through one runner's 42K from the back corral in 2026—her first marathon—then turn to overseas entry, still open at the end of September 2026.
10:30 a.m.
, 6K. That's when the first cutoff closes at the Nagoya Women's Marathon (名古屋ウィメンズマラソン).
On March 8, 2026, one Japanese runner starting her first marathon from the back corral was worried about that number before the gun even went. She posted her entire race day to the YouTube channel "Mejiro Mai Channel."
Stiff from the cold, she held 8 minutes per kilometer and checked her watch at the 6K sign. The cutoff she had expected to scrape through left more room than she thought.
That day, 17,101 runners took part and 96.6 percent of them reached the finish. The 2027 race falls on Sunday, March 14, with the field raised by 2,000 to 22,000.
A women-only marathon, a 7-hour limit, and a route that leaves Vantelin Dome Nagoya and returns to the same dome. On numbers alone, few races are this forgiving of a first marathon.
Seen from the back corral, though, 7 hours isn't one generous stretch. Between the start line and the finish, it breaks into 11 separate closing times.
1The start line closes at 9:40 a.m.: the back corral's first cutoff at 6K

The marathon gun goes at 9:10 a.m. The first line of the official cutoff table comes 30 minutes later: 9:40 a.
m., when the start line closes. The first cutoff, at 6.0K in front of Nagoya City Museum, shuts at 10:30 a.
m. That's 80 minutes from the gun, but anyone who only just crosses the start line at 9:40 has 50 minutes left, or 8:20 per kilometer. At 8 minutes per kilometer, even a runner starting from the very back reaches the first cutoff.
That was the pace the Mejiro Mai Channel runner set as her target. The footage of her morning is brief. The crowds were so thick that she gave up on a toilet stop before the start, and in the cold she hunted for a patch of sunlight to stand in.
After the start she ducked into a portable toilet beside the course, then ran doing the math on the time it had cost her. Where the crowds were loud, her legs quickened on their own and her watch showed 7:41. She reined herself in: "Today is still long."
Approaching 6K, she deliberately eased off: "It's 20 now, so I think I'll make it."

2Walking from 12K: the math of walk 1K, run 1K

At around 12K it was her legs that went heavy first. Her body wasn't tired, she said; her legs were. About 1 hour remained until the next cutoff.
She decided to walk 1 kilometer at a brisk pace and called it "strategic walking." In an earlier 30K race she had forced herself to keep running and wrecked her legs. The math went like this: hold 8:30 to 9:00 per kilometer and, in theory, she could finish.
In 2026, half marathon runners shared the early part of the course on the same day. She said she stayed clear of the aid stations, where the half runners grabbed the sponges and water first. Near 21K the half runners peeled off toward their finish, and only the tail of the marathon field was left on the road.
She wasn't the only one walking, she said, and spectators along the route handed her cola and snacks. Start walking after the legs have stopped and it is already too late. She changed gait early, at 12K, because an earlier race had taught her body that lesson.
3A 9°C start in 2026, and headwinds and gloves after 25K

Race day in 2026 was clear. According to the World Athletics race report, the temperature at the start was 9°C (about 48°F). Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui, who won her second straight title in 2:21:54, said afterward: "The wind was really strong."
The leaders ran into that wind for a little over two hours. A runner at the back faces it for close to seven. Around 25K, the Mejiro Mai Channel runner confessed a regret to the camera.
Before the race she had asked ChatGPT whether she needed gloves, was told she didn't, and left them behind. She should have brought them, she said. The wind kept blowing her ear warmers off.
Gloves came with their own problem. The runner behind the channel "Hiroka's Sports Log," on this start line just a week after the Tokyo Marathon, stopped once past halfway to fumble for painkillers with gloved hands, and said her pace never came back after that. "My heart rate had room to spare, but my legs were gone."
Nagoya Castle comes into view at 26K, followed at 27–28K by the Aichi Prefectural Government Office, Nagoya City Hall, and IG Arena, completed in 2025. The 26.2K cutoff at Marunouchi Junior High School closes at 1:37 p.m.
, the 29.9K cutoff on Chichibu-dori at 2:11 p.m. The longer the walking stretches, the colder the body gets.
Thin gloves worn to the finish beat a throwaway layer, and fuel belongs where it can be reached with the gloves still on.
4The last cutoffs after 35K, as traffic returns to the roads behind you

Past 30K, she said, everything below her knees had stopped listening. Soon the pain climbed above them too. Still, she kept to the order: walk 1K, run 1K.
"'10K to go' hits hard, but I've run 30K to get here, so this is easy." The final cutoffs: 35.0K in front of the Chunichi Shimbun at 2:59 p.m.
, 38.6K on Sakura-dori at 3:32 p.m., 41.7K at the dome parking lot entrance at 4:05 p.
m. The finish closes at 4:10 p.m.
When Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER on Sakura-dori, first passed at 19K, comes back into view at 36K, a little over 6K remain. Somewhere past 35K, she asked a more experienced runner she met along the road: could she make it now if she walked? At a brisk walk she'd be fine, came the answer.
Meanwhile, on the road behind them, traffic restrictions were lifting and cars had started to move. She quickened her step so she wouldn't end up on the sweep bus.
5The last 500 meters back into the dome, and a Baccarat tumbler for every finisher

Every finisher receives a Baccarat tumbler. Up to the 2024 race it was a Tiffany pendant; the switch came in 2025. A New Balance finisher T-shirt comes with it.
The line for finisher gifts runs long, so plans for after leaving the dome are best kept loose. As the finish drew near, volunteers along the road called out "Okaerinasai" ("welcome back"). Voices counted down the last 500 meters, and she entered the dome and crossed the line: the same line the leader had crossed in 2:21-and-change that day.
Her first marathon done, she looked back in front of the camera to 30 minutes earlier. "Thirty minutes ago my legs wouldn't move anymore, and I thought I might not make it to the finish."
622,000 spots for 2027, and overseas entry is what's left

The Chunichi Shimbun, the race's organizer, reported on July 1, 2026, that the 2027 field would grow by 2,000 to 22,000. In 2018, 21,915 runners took part, earning the race a Guinness World Record as the world's largest women's marathon. The new spots were split across lotteries and several first-come, first-served categories, and as of late September 2026 most have closed.
Bibs must be collected in person at Vantelin Dome two days before the race, on Friday, March 12, from noon to 8:30 p.m., or the day before, Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.
m. to 7:30 p.m.
The dome is about a five-minute walk from Exit 1 of Nagoya Dome-mae Yada Station (ナゴヤドーム前矢田駅) on the Meijo and Yutorito lines. The general lottery for Japan-based entrants, 5,500 spots, opened on September 17 and closed on the night of the 24th, with results due by early October. The first-come categories that ran from July to September—Challenge, Travel Plan, Charity, and the group for runners 30 and under—are also over.
There is a category called Heart Support: participants who have taken a first-aid course since March 14, 2024, or who hold a medical qualification, run with the field and look after runners who collapse. The door still open is Overseas Entry. It is a first-come window for people living outside Japan and for those applying in English, with 3,500 spots across its early and general phases combined.
Early entry closed on August 24; general entry, at ¥25,000, runs until December 25. The official guidance notes, however, that it closes as soon as spots fill. Anyone living outside Japan need not wait for lottery results: apply while spots remain.
Editor's pick
We recommend the Nagoya Women's Marathon as a first marathon. A 96.6 percent finish rate in 2026, a 7-hour limit, and a simple route out of one dome and back into it. It's a World Athletics Platinum Label race, and in 2027 it doubles as a selection race for Japan's team at the World Championships in Beijing, but at the back of the field the day unfolds without any of that weight.
There are conditions. Don't count the 7 hours as walking time. From the gun, the 41.7K cutoff comes at 6 hours 55 minutes: just under 10 minutes per kilometer.
Cross the start line close to its 9:40 a.m. closure and the first 6K demands 8:20 per kilometer.
If you can stay under 9 minutes per kilometer through 30K, you belong on this start line. If you're not there yet, spend the time until March on 30K training runs mixed with walking. It isn't a bad choice for runners chasing a time, either: a certified course, and a 9°C (about 48°F) start in 2026.
But if the wind blows as hard as it did in 2026, revise the target time first.
Overseas entry stays open until December 25, 2026, while spots remain; results of the domestic lottery in Japan arrive in early October. Either way, print the cutoff table now.
Its 11 lines, from the 9:40 a.m.
start-line closure to the 4:10 p.m.
finish cutoff, become the training plan for a first marathon.
